please talk me out of a S4

I have a 2011 P+ A4. I have the speed bug but shouldn't spend the money to get a S4. Is there anyone that has had both and can talk me out of the extra $10,0000+ for an extra 222 horse power?

I just traded my 2011 S4 for a 2011 A4 Avant. I loved the power and the sound of the S4, but the gas mileage did not make sense for the amount of driving I do. I was spending easily $300+ in gas every month. I've only had the A4 for a week and a half, and my gas consumption has already been cut at least in half. Maybe even more as time goes on. Someday I'll own another S4 (if they ever come back as a wagon), but for me, the 2.0T makes more sense.

My suggestion is to look at the S4's that are available in your price range and compare them to what your current car has. My S4 was a Premium Plus with only the basic options. My A4 is a fully-loaded Prestige and has all the toys my S4 didn't have. If you have the cash to spend and can find an S4 equipped as you like, I say do it. Don't forget that besides increased fuel costs, your insurance will likely go up as well.

If you're itching for more power, I'd look into a turbo upgrade on your A4. I plan to do that at some point.

Not going to be easy. I just went from a 2010 A5 PremPlus w/Sport Package, to a 2013 S5. My wife has a 2013 A4. The A5 was a great car with great highway gas mileage. The A4 is the same. The S5? Outstanding car! The gas mileage? A work in progress.

Have barely 1200 miles on the S5 currently, but the mileage is improving. As long as I resist the urge to bury the throttle!

Have taken a couple of long trips with the S5 already, but everytime I got on an Interstate, I ran into bumper-to-bumper traffic for miles, and that killed the mileage. Even so, between the moving & non-moving driving, I got about 23 mpg. Not great, but not bad.

Others have reported 28-30 mpg on the highway (with the V6), so I'm hoping to get near that, once the car has about 5k+ miles on it. Taking a 1k mile round trip for Christmas, so hope to get a better idea of the true highway mileage without traffic.

If gas mileage isn't a big concern to you, then the choice is obvious. You will love the S4.

Audi has a better track record.

I would not feel so bad. The S4 has only an extra 125 horse power and 67 torque!

Throw the money at a pilot's license.

Only you can determine what is financially comfortable for yourself. If the extra cost is not going to strap you or cause longterm grief, I'd say go for it. Can't take it all with when you croak.

I'll talk you out of the S4:
The S4 is the biggest rip-off Audi sells. It's arguably exactly the same as the A4 with the Sport Package, except they put a bigger motor in it and bilk you for an additional $8,000. They try to make you feel better about the money you spent by tossing $100 worth of fancy stitching, $5 of caliper paint, and $15 of shiny silver plastic on the mirrors and the rockers/front.

Aside from the fact that the car is completely inscrutable from any common A4 by any common person, only most hardened Audiphile would even bother to look at the emblems (or care) to see the difference between an A4 and an S4.

Add to this the fact that the S4 really shines over the A4 on wide open unhindered highway, which is laughably rare in this country, and the fact that you will pay though the nose for insurance and gasoline, and what you get with the S4 is a giant sloppy stupid person tax.

This is, of course, just my opinion, but it stands.

Agree with that statement. Just came back from Germany and had a Tiguan 1.4 for a rental and hit 127 mph on the highway (granted going down hill with a full load of passengers), but if I did that here in the States I would be criminally charged for speeding. When people ask me why I don't chip my A4 I will tell them I do not know what to do with th extra speed my car has now, after I hit 4th gear with all the grannies driving.
