Default Voice command and phone book

I have the Audi concert radio. The voice command has only telephone commands and when I try the SELECT command it tells me that the phone book is empty. The phone book is not empty - I can see and dial the contacts with the buttons. I can dial a number using the voice command, i.e. it does work in general.
Is it looking at some phone book that is stored in the car? Can that be synced with the phone or disabled?

I had to speak the numbers and names into a seperate memory. I think its cos the voice recognition needs to hear you speak the name instead of guessing how you would pronounce it?

I also had to store both the voice tags AND numbers into a separate memory.
Say "Help" to get a list of commands.

(I have an older phone that the car does not import the phone book from, so I have manually entered a selection of contacts into the "Directory" in the car. I thought I could record voice tags to these entries but it seems voice tags stored in a separate memory. I read that this voice tag memory is limited to something like 40 or 50 entries.)
