2017 A4 coding tweaks
There are a few things that I would like to change but it will probably take a while before this will be figured out, if possible at all:
- Show gears in D/S - done
- enable ACC default distance setup in the MMI - done
- use personal data SIM for WiFi clients (t-mobile in my case) - done (Note: if using external SIM, all data will use the external SIM even the data used for Google Earth and other Audi Connect services)
- enable Hotspot and Client mode which apparently is not enabled by default - visible but not working
- turn off that ugly middle segment in the rear when using the turn signal
- keep the bottom DRL in the front on while using the turn signal
Enable Automatic Gear selection shown in DIS
[02 – Auto Trans] [Adaptation – 10]
Select “Single Gear Display” from top channel drop down menu
Select “D on/S on” from New value drop down menu
Enable Automatic PDC Front
[09 – Central Elect.] [Coding - 07]
Select Long Coding Helper
Select Bye 37
Check Bit 1
Exit Long Coding Helper
Click Do It
Enable ACC default distance in MMI (VCDS 16.6 or newer required)
[13 - Auto Dist. Reg][Adaptation - 10]
Select "Distance basic setting option" in dropdown
Select "On" from New value drop down
Save and reset MMI
Enable Laptimer shown in DIS
[17 – Instrument Cluster] [Coding – 07]
Select Long Coding Helper
Write down coding as backup
Select byte 01
Enable bit 03
Increase time required to open trunk lid with remote key
[46 - Central Convenience][Adaptation - 10]
Scroll down and find channel "Time for opening rear lid with remote control"
Load Stored Value (should be 800 ms)
Enter new value in "ms". Example: 2000, Max: 5000
Click Do It
Double beep on opening (didn't work on my A4B9 after locking, waiting and unlocking, may need to wait longer)
[46 - Central Convenience][Adaptation - 10]
Scroll down and find channel "sounder_settings-beeptime_opening_central_locking"
change from "no_beep" to "double_beep"
Click Do It
Not sure if this helps Canadian "non-AudiConnect" owner to enable the modem but might be worth a try
[5F - Information Electronics][Adaptation - 10]
Select "Vehicle configuration-LTE_module"
was "activated" in my US A4B9
Video in Motion, no disclaimer when entering destination while driving
[5F - Information Electronics]
Details not public yet but possible with VCP
Enabling Lane Assist in cars with Pre-Sense Front

Keep us updated on your progress. I just took delivery of a Moonlight Blue Premium+ model and would be interested in some of the same modifications, especially the ability to use another hotspot.
How did you manage to get the gear to show up on the VC?

The C7 coding worked just fine:
Enable Automatic Gear selection shown in DIS
[02 – Auto Trans] [Adaptation – 10]
Select “Single Gear Display” from top channel drop down menu
Select “D on/S on” from New value drop down menu

On the topic of using an external SIM card for data, there is an adaptation channel in 5F called "Internal SIM card; use" with the default setting of "always". Changing this to "automatic" extends the Data Connection Settings menu and allows entering an APN, username and password. The MIB2 detected the required APN automatically based on the SIM card inserted just like older MMI head units.
After restarting the MMI:
A speedtest confirms different ISPs depending on the SIM card used. With the eSIM provided by Audi:
With my t-mobile SIM:
And with a Verizon SIM:
I don't think Verizon would support 3G since the LTE module in the MIB2 is likely not supporting the required channels but t-mobile should work on 3G also. I should be able to test both on the next road trip through a more rural area downstate.
The switch to the eSIM is easy, just remove the external SIM and wait a few seconds. Switching to the external SIM requires a restart off the MIB2 after inserting the external SIM (didn't try to just wait longer, it may switch automatically eventually).
Google Earth, Traffic and WiFi hotspot where all working with the t-mobile SIM (3 bars):
with the eSIM active, 5 bars (I did not wait for traffic to come online when taking this picture but it appeared a few seconds later):
While this will allow using a personal SIM for WiFi clients, it will (likely) not avoid the need to subscribe to Audi Connect for Google Earth, Search, Traffic and the other services. Also, I don't think that the MIB2 will route Audi Connect traffic though the eSIM and WiFi client traffic through the external SIM, I think it's either or and with an external SIM all Audi Connect traffic will go against the personal data plan.

I have a Q7 en route and I'm psyched to read this. I'm switching from Land Rover after more than a decade. So, I'm not familiar with Audi tech (but excited to get it).
Will the "VCDS® with HEX-NET® Enthusiast USB & WiFi Interface" work on the Q7 (I recognize this is an A4 forum). I don't have a Windows PC, but I do have an iPad.
Also, is it possible to get the Google Satellite overlay via an alternate SIM configuration?
Thanks, in advance.

For now (and probably a long time or forever) Google Earth and the other Connect Prime features will not work without active Connect Prime subscription regardless of the SIM used. The external SIM is primarily for WiFi clients, if someone is not or only very little making use of WiFi clients then the 6GB included in the Prime plans should be sufficient.
