Audi and the carbon Build up woes
#21
Sorry, you'll have to do your own research. It becomes a problem if consumption increases over time -- thus the consumption test, thus the occessional engine replacement.
This is a design choice, not a major problem, that the auto makers have a hard time explaining so they say "It's normal," which it is but people panic anyway because instead of explaining matters they leave it at that and thus is borne a great conspiracy.
Edit: The design choice is to decrease friction in order to improve fuel economy, thus some oil enters and burns -- some may be noticeable, some may not. My personal opinion is this is why the oil reservoir is often overfilled and we're seeing dipsticks disappear, especially at Audi, where this charge has been heavily levelled. All automated now, have you noticed?
In any event, changing oil more often and using top tier gas to help clean the injectors can only help to delay the valve cleaning inevitably needed for this style of DI engine.

US destined 2.0l engines only come with DI. However some, if not most european engines actually have Port Injection and Direct Injection were PI runs under lighter loads and DI takes over when demand increases. Due to that fact, european engines with both shouldn't have this issue !

APR actually has an upgrade for older EA888 engines that restore the port injection.

Our intake manifold actually has the bungs molded for the manifold injectors.

I know this is an old thread...but I had a friend just text me and he said Audi charged him $1400 to pull the heads and blast the carbon out of the valve pockets. I do know he usually only drives around town on short trips. He said he just turn 50K miles on his 2014 Allroad.

Yeah, well, he is 75 years old and took his Allroad to the Audi dealership here in the Portland area of Oregon...what can I say.
I told him a few years ago to take some long trips and run that engine..heat it up..He mostly does short trips around town.
That said, I am on my third TT, now a TTS and have no problem heating up the engine.

I agree that $1400 is not unreasonable if they pulled the heads but if they only thing they needed to do was carbon clean the intake valves it was unnecessary.

Yes, I don't think the price is unreasonable...but shocking to my friend who really had no idea about carbon build up...another case of Caveat Emptor is suppose.
