That's an actual "range limiter " built into the system. It can be disabled with OBDEleven.

The fob is more range limited than any car I’ve ever had, with the exception of my only other German car, a Mercedes. Chalking it up to a european/German thing.

I am pretty sure the car locks itself after 45 seconds when the key is past a certain distance from the car.

I just tested it by unlocking my vehicle and walking to the other side of the house and back. Doors were locked when I went back.
Page 40 of my owners manual also states: "If the vehicle is unlocked and none of the doors, the rear lid or hood are opened within 45 seconds, the vehicle locks again automatically."
Didn't even need to walk away based on the text.
