Does ignition need to be on during map update?
I am updating my maps to 2018-19 with the files I have loaded onto an SD card. Does the ignition have to be on during the whole process, or will the update proceed even after you turn the ignition off?
Thanks.

Be careful with that - you may run your battery low enough during an update that the car will shut down to ensure that you can start it. My car dropped out of accessory mode with a "battery low" message on the dash after copying a bunch of music to the built-in hard drive (Jukebox) without the car being on.

Somewhere in between. The map update will continue after the car is turned off while the MMI head unit is still powered; when the power management system shuts down the MMI unit, then it stops and will resume when you next start the car.

On this topic, I have updated my B9 maps twice now. The first update, I did the US map update but selected the “regional” option and I used an SD card. The second update I did a couple weeks ago I did a complete US/Canada update but this time I used a USB thumb drive.
FWIW and maybe it’s just my car, but I actually think the update installed quicker with the full map update and thumb drive.

No it does not.
I started my last one on a 10 minute drive to work, shut the car off when it was at 15% complete or so.
When I left work that afternoon the car fired right up and waiting for me was a "your update completed successfully" message on the MMI.

The update continues automatically after turning the ignition on again as it doesn't update when the ignition is off. The mmi, or the dashboard, screen should tell you this..

Anyone else having trouble updating over-the-air? It seems to almost always hang with "Searching for update data. Please wait...", but sometimes errors with "Error accessing update server": https://photos.app.goo.gl/wnEDG2X6cSj3wF5S6
