Default First Audi Nightmare

Hi All!

Was hoping to get your two cents on my current situation:

Brand new B9 A4 S-Line Quattro 2.0 TDI S-Tronic (190BHP) delivered in April.

Was delivered to myself with 20 miles on the clock but when i drove it there was a hell of a knock coming from the front. VW specialist was called to inspect the car and he deemed it serious enough that i was advised not to drive the car. He did find A/C pipes rubbing/knocking together which he did say were going to fail eventually but was not creating the noise.
Was in the Audi dealership for 3 weeks as they were struggling to locate the noise. They changed the whole NSF suspension piece by piece and turned out to be the Strut - but there was a high demand for this part hence the delay in getting the car back - i wonder if anyone else has had this on here.

It is now back into the dealership due to a heap of issues which Audi are basically saying there is nothing wrong with the car. I am hoping to see if anyone else has encountered these as I am close to returning the car:

HANDBRAKE
• 50/50 chance it will turn on when Park is pressed or the car is turned off. My understanding is that it should always turn on when car is turned off.
GEAR SELECTOR
• Does not always allow me to put car into drive – even though foot is firmly pressed down on the brake. (I have a video of this occurring). I have to turn off the car and start again.
START STOP
• Majority of the time it does not detect my foot on the brake when I try to start the car and it then turns off the car. This happens a lot now.
• The back windows sometimes opens when I start the car – Elbow is nowhere near the window switches on the door.
• Handbrake issue as above.
BOOT
• I have come out of the house and the boot is open. This even happens when both keys are left alone and the car has been shut for days. To try and stop this I have bought a pouch to stop the keys talking to the car (also to prevent theft) no change(have tested the pouches do work). Happens in car parks while my key is in pouch.
• 50/50 chance to close boot with advanced key.
HEADLIGHTS
• Steaming up already with moisture (no power washer used on them)
• AutoFull beam headlights sometimes do not detect oncoming traffic. I have been getting flashed a few times now & sensor on windscreen has been clean on these occasions.
ENGINE
• Engine coolant is well below the low (hot & cold) - been topped up recently aswell by Audi.
• Rattle coming from gearbox.
• Engine is sluggish intermittently.
SAT NAV
• Keeps failing to update.

Paying a lot for the car which is why i'm annoyed Audi are saying there is nothing wrong with it.

Anyway I'm hoping to get some feedback from yourselves. Always wanted an Audi but this has not been a great start!

Cheers

Handbrake will not always turn on, not sure what the rules are - might have to do with seatbelt, incline, time of day (joking) but the brake will not always turn on.
Boot/Trunk opening is kind of normal if the key is close to the car and someone/something steps to close to the rear bumper or trunk button is accidentally pressed. There is a coding change the dealer (or OBD11) can do to extend the time required to press the button to 5s or 8s (forgot was the max was) and that helped in some cases.
Moisture in headlights is "normal" to a certain degree (Xenon as well as LED)

The other issues do not sound normal to me

Its interesting why they wouldn't just enable the handbrake regardless rather than just relying on the Gearbox. Surely it would be easy enough to code in.

Yeah i understand where you are coming from but it is happening randomly which means i don't feel safe leaving anything in the boot of value. I bought the lined pouches for the keys to stop it but it still happens. It would help to extend the time for the button press but the randomness needs to be fix first.

The moisture in the headlights was pretty bad, water droplets forming at the bottom plus there is dirt on the inside which is very visible when the lights are on.

I have never noticed condensation, let alone dirt inside the headlights. Perhaps the seals are not tight enough. Regarding the trunk/boot opening randomly, that happened a few times to me also and others have mentioned that on this forum. There is a setting in the MMI to adjust that.

Sorry to hear that you're having issues with your B9.

What are part of the world are you located? B9 TDIs are not in the US marketplace and maybe some locals can help weigh in on your issues.

I wonder if you're brake booster is bad which would result in your inability to shift gears, start-stop issues.

The headlight leaking issues do not seem normal. My 2017 is now 12 months old and there has never been that issue (knock on wood) and it's was very rainy last winter and has been rainy the last week or so.

As for the intermittent truck opening- it's been discussed in other forums here. That would really be annoying.

Maybe you got a lemon- are there consumer protection laws were you are? In CA, if you have the same thing repaired 3 times, it falls under that law.

Good luck-
I have an intermittent rear driver (left hand) window that opens 4" randomly. I thought it was only when it's very cold, but then it happened a few times over the summer so I have no idea. Dealer also said it's normal. (I don't think so).

My observation is that if you get the car in Park and then press the Stop button, the handbrake stays off.
If you press the Stop button while in gear without pressing Park first, the handbrake is automatically activated. It must be a safety feature needed for emergency braking.

HANDBRAKE

This happens to us all.
GEAR SELECTOR
• Does not always allow me to put car into drive – even though foot is firmly pressed down on the brake. (I have a video of this occurring). I have to turn off the car and start again.
Sounds like the sensor on the pedal is faulty.
START STOP
• Majority of the time it does not detect my foot on the brake when I try to start the car and it then turns off the car. This happens a lot now.
• The back windows sometimes opens when I start the car – Elbow is nowhere near the window switches on the door.
• Handbrake issue as above.
See anser to gear selection.

There is a TSB for this.
HEADLIGHTS
• Steaming up already with moisture (no power washer used on them)
• AutoFull beam headlights sometimes do not detect oncoming traffic. I have been getting flashed a few times now & sensor on windscreen has been clean on these occasions.
Normal behaviour for the headlights to have moisture inside, all cars do this. Are you sure it isn't just oncoming traffic reacting to the intensity of LED's?
ENGINE
• Engine coolant is well below the low (hot & cold) - been topped up recently aswell by Audi.
• Rattle coming from gearbox.
• Engine is sluggish intermittently.
SAT NAV
• Keeps failing to update.
Be more specific, which method are you using for updating?

Anyway I'm hoping to get some feedback from yourselves. Always wanted an Audi but this has not been a great start!

Hey Everyone

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry for getting back to you so late.
I am based in Scotland, UK.

The handbrake is annoying but since everyone else has the 'issue'. Seems I will just have to live with it.

I have looked through the whole MMI for boot settings before it went in and could not find anything. Will most likely need the dealer to unlock the option or just change it in the coding for me.
But why is it opening regardless with both keys blocked from talking to the car?

I agree i think the brake sensor is faulty and causing the gear selector issue & engine start/stop issues. I will push for this to be swapped out.

As for the lights they steam up regardless if the lights have been on or off (for days). Really don't think it should be doing this at under 12 months. My old car, Toyota Corolla Compressor, never had the issue with halogens steaming up until about 2+ years.

Sat Nav was not updating through SD card or Phone Download.

As for the engine - i managed to get a decent hire car today as Audi want to keep the car in for a while but no courtesy cars available. I ended up with Brand new Volvo XC60 D5 AWD R-Design 2.4L. I am blown away by the performance of it to the point where I don't want to go back to the Audi as it was just so sluggish in comparison. On paper the Audi is quicker with slightly less power. So how do i get Audi to take me seriously with investigating the performance of the car?

Unfortunately regardless of what your Toyota did headlamps these days do fog up more, mine do it just when I am washing the car. See here for more information https://www.carlightblog.com/2014/06...ltimate-guide/

Forgot to add that as LED headlamps do not produce much heat, compared to halogen's, then the fogging is slower at going...
