If you cannot get into the car, towing like this would be the best option.

It's on p. 39 of the 2017 A4 manual. It doesn't explicitly say 3 days but that's roughly what it is.

What it says: "If your vehicle is left standing for a long period of time, note the following:
- The proximity sensor switches off after a few days to save energy. You then have to pull once on the door handle to unlock the vehicle and a second time to open it."

That last sentence, BTW, is incorrect - the earlier cars, at least, will not wake up by pulling on the door handle; you have to unlock the door with the fob.

Well I think I was turning it wrong. Came back after work and tried again, you turn it counter clockwise to unlock the door.

Doesn't seem to be a way to open the trunk without bringing down the rear seats and opening it from the inside.

It seems the battery was completely drained. Car doesn't start or respond to key fob anymore. Trickle charging it for 4 hours now, some of the dash lights are on but still doesn't start.

Not sure what caused the drain. I thought the battery stopped all electronics to prevent that from happening.

The page number depends on what version of the manual you have.

I have heard of failing batteries in B9 A4's. This one might be the case of a failed battery. Failed meaning literally dead. Trickle-charging it may not help especially if the internal plates are broken, i.e. the battery won't hold a charge.

Here are some dead battery threads:

Well I have an OBDEleven too... that seems like the common link between these cases.

Not keeping that plugged in anymore.

Seems like it. So, what's the verdict on the battery?

Dead battery cell.

Replaced whole battery.
