P2185 Code - Check Engine Light
I have a 2017 A4. I'm getting a check engine light with a code of P2185 which is the engine coolant temperature. Seems like there is one coolant temp sensor underneath the coolant overflow tank. Maybe another sensor on the engine? Does anyone have a procedure to chang the coolant sensor under the coolant overflow tank? How do I tell which sensor is bad?
Thanks
Sherman
P2185
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit High
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor @ Radiator Outlet short to battery / open circuit
• Sensor voltage > 4.90 V
So that would be the temp sensor on the radiator outlet (bottom port).
Sherman
engine cold
briefly open coolant tank cap to relieve pressure
remove front noise insulation (the under engine pan)
unplug sensor
put cloth under to catch escaping coolant
remove clip and remove sensor
replace the o-ring (I imagine the new sensor may come with it?)
immediately insert new sensor to minimize coolant loss
check coolant level
So appears no. You should have the workshop manuals for your car if you want to DIY a lot of the simple stuff that might come up over the years. erwin.audiusa.com, pay for a day, get all the PDFs for your VIN. The cooling system stuff is in the 2.0L TFSI engine document in this case. But grab them all, you never know when an engine task will say "look at the body exterior manual to perform this subtask", etc.
Keep in mind, you haven't isolated the issue to the sensor. It very well could be a wiring issue. Both wires to the G83 radiator outlet coolant temp sensor come from the J623 ECM. But to test the G83 itself, apparently you should register a resistance reading of 1500-3000 Ω across the pins of the G83 sensor at room temp (68°F). If you measure that, then I'd look to the wiring.
