I am a bit confused as of why the drive train would affect low speed maneuverability in a parking lot. Is that because with the engine layout and steering design, at full lock, the front wheel angle is smaller? Because I never had issue with the low speed maneuverability (u-turn or parking) with my mk7 gti.

check your transmission fluid first before you do anything, low oil can cause this issues, B9's have known transmission fluid leak so check that before you do anything else
