So our cab box in the trunk. holding the roof mechanism does NOT close anymore! Basically we can't pull the handle to lift up the box, so we have full access to the trunk.

Dealer and mechanic say they need to spend hours trying to figure out what's wrong, and probably it's a cable, etc... I don't wanna spend too much on this older car, what's the best way to fix this? Is it common? Any easy fix?

Don't know of an easy fix, but it probably is the cable. Mine is broke & I just live with it.

Our box is down and the lever does not raise it. I found that I can lift the bottom of it upward toward the top of the trunk by lifting the bottom of the box with my hands. At least it makes room for more storage, but something has to be put under it to keep it raised.

It's likely the cable; I've had THREE different times it's been replaced ($$OUCH) on mine. Seriously, it's made rather cheaply (mainly plastic), and many people have had to replace it or live w/ it. Problem is the trunk is so darn small when you don't have that extra space.

I know of no cheap fix for this - so sorry.

One time it was from when someone hit my car from behind - the force of the accident busted either the cable or other parts of the mechanism. Insurance rplcd that one.
