Default DRL Question

My neighbor's father is visiting from NY. We were chatting this morning and he told me he recently bought a 2007 A4 Cabriolet. He does not have Nav; adjust wheel on dash, so no MMI.

Questions:

1. Are the daytime running lights their own bulb, or do they use headlights?
2. Can the DRLs be turned on/off? If so, how?

He asked as he's concerned if the bulb for DRL is associated with headlights, and burns out, it will be very difficult to change. His thought is leaving DRL off extends bulb life.

Thanks!

Default DRL

My 08 A4 Quattro has two switches next to the headlight switch. Push them in to pop out and turn. One disables the DRL. The other turns on a delay timer-keeps the headlights on for a bit when the car is turned off. I believe the DRL is it's own bulb.

Phillips 17782-05389146 is the bulb. Not the headlamp.
