2006 A4 ..... with top up roof storage box, in trunk, doesn't retract. Lever moves freely but box doesn't go up to allow more room in trunk.

Sounds like the cable snapped. It happens. I've replaced 3 xs in my 03. First was after someone crashed into my backside.
Sucks. Its a cheap plastic mechanism and expensive to replace.

If you did the repair, what's the the process and can the cable be purchased alone? Or does the whole unit (box and all) have to be bought? Can't find any info on that. I can live with it as is, no big deal, but if it's doable I'd rather have it working.

I believe its the entire unit that has to be replaced. Think it was around $400 but it was a while ago. Had my local longtime mechanic do it, and he ordered the parts from the local Audi dealership.
I tried living w/ it as well, but it's a pain so I just bit the bullet and did it,
BTW, if you ever get rear-ended, be SURE to check this; I was slammed in stopped fwy traffic. Got my car repaired, then saw the trunk storage box wasn't working. Reported it and their insurance covered it.
