My first car (bought off lease after my dad had it 3 years) was a /77 Caprice Classic -- 4 door -- first year of downsized B bodies. One of best cars I have ever had. Drove it from 85,000-2000,000 miles with little in way of trouble. Even with all the plumbing under hood plenty of room to work. Not lots of hp but sufficient tq to move along decently. I do remember the Oldsmobile V8s from the late 60s. Mom had a friend with a 69 Cutlass that she loaned me from time to time. OMG what a rush when you pressed the go pedal in that buggy. That's one thing I really like about the A6 with the 3.0T -- pretty immediate response to the go pedal -- reminds me of the old American V8s pre-emission control. Only American V8 I've driven recently was rental Dodge something or other (4 door) with the base hemi -- lots of scoot there but pretty low rent interior, etc. Happy New Year!

Best,
Jeff

2006 A4 Quattro, I'm pushing 260,000. She's getting tired, replaced the turbo at around 200k, other than that haven't done much besides change the oil & brakes.
Might have to make a hard decision soon, it's in the shop getting an estimate for next inspection. If it needs $2000 in work, that's more than she's worth.

That's very encouraging -- you got a good one -- as good or better than my trusty old 2004 Acura TL w/171,000 trouble-free miles with the exception of an a/c compressor about 1 year ago (it is my spare car). We have a /15 A6 3.0T and a /18 A4 Quattro. The A4 is leased and under warranty for full term of lease so I have no worries there. I'm inclined not to keep the A6 more than 5-6 years/60-65,000 miles. Just too much tech on these newer cars that can go wrong and get expensive quickly. I enjoy driving both the A6 and the A4 but there have been a few things with my A6 in its first 3.5 years/32K miles that, although taken care of under warranty, have shaken my confidence in the product most notably the replacement of upper timing chain tensioners in the A6 at 3 years/27K miles. Glad Audi took care of this under warranty. If it happened post warranty would have cost many thousands. If you haven't, try out the B9 A4 -- really nice/fun car.

Best,
Jeff

Walter, as I am fond of saying about the old TL -- she owes you nothing at this point. Assuming you are financially able and so inclined, get yourself something new and enjoy! I have been in the habit of picking up new cars in the last year of production of current model but with the A4 lease picked up a B9. I'm not all that enthused by some of the new tech but I could very easily detect an improvement in chassis rigidity/ride/handling in the B9 over my C7 A6. Very apparent improvements and glad I got a current model this time around.

For those of you in the 100k mile club, what has been your experience with how long the control arms last? I am at 95k and am starting to wonder how much longer I have. Am just replacing the motor mounts now. Thanks.

Extended warranty covered motor mounts and control arms. While everything was out I had Bilstein B6 shocks installed. went to the Georgia Audi Club's quattro de Mayo soon after and the car was just amazing on the moonshine roads in the Smokeys. Drives better than brand new.
