2013 or 2014 A6 Prestige
I've been offered $2,200 under invoice on a few 2013s around the SoCal area. Without question, I can order a 2014 for $500 over invoice with Audi Care or at invoice with Audi Care at half price.
Is a realized $1400 or $1800 discount on a 2013 enough to justify buying last year's model? Also, the 2013s I've been considering have the 20" sport package and I suspect, if I ordered a 2014, I'd opt for the 19" sport package.

You might also think about whether you might like a TDI, which is only an option in 2014. I know they gouge you in CA on diesel, so it might not be a better choice for you than the 3.0T.

I'll probably hold on to the car for about 4 to 6 years, depending.
I do a lot of driving (20,000+ per year) and while diesel is attractive for the MPG, only a small percentage of gas stations around SoCal offer diesel and based on my research there are additional maintenance and costs inherent to the TDI that offset it's attractiveness, practicality and any perceived cost savings.

The one other thing that you need to consider is whether or not the cars in inventory really are what you want. I'm kind of picky and have specific options that I really want (e.g. HUD, color combos, wheel choices).
If was able to find a 2013 model on the lot that I really liked, it would be hard to resist for the deal you are getting.

Of course, I ordered my 2013 with the 19" sport package - but really did not care for the OEM wheels and just purchased aftermarket 19" wheels - and hopefully will sell my OEM wheels at some point. So not the best financial decision, but rather one that enhances my enjoyment of the car

If you are ever near Portland, let me know....I could use your negotiating skills. Post some pictures of your new conquest if you get a chance.

I always thought diesels required less maintenance than gas engines. Is there something about the TDI that's different?
I think it's probably early to judge how the resale market will treat TDI A6 models. I know the VW TDI community is absolutely rabid about the cars and people will bend over backwards to get their hands on used ones.
