That is freaking nuts.
You spent a lot of time and money on this car. Good for you for committing and finishing a product the way you envisioned it.

I just have one gripe: no sun roof?

No sun roof for me - i had it in one of my other Audis but here in Romania there's lots of dust/dirt - every time i opened the sun roof i had dust all over the place. So i quit on this option from the beginning

Finally got my RS gear **** - i will describe the process in the next post.

Default Upgrading to the RS gear ****

Hey,

I wanted to write down these instructions because i didn't find anything at all on internet about this (or maybe i didn't search enough).

So here is (in a few lines of text, no pictures) the guide for upgrading from your current gear **** to a RS (type) gear ****.

- Use a special removal tool or try putting your fingers under the edge of the leather base of the **** and carefully pull it out.

- Continue by lifting the leather up to reveal the bracket that holds the ****.

- Looking at the base of the gear **** there is a plastic piece / sort of a bracket that holds the **** in place. Rotate the bracket 90 degrees to the right. Once done this should feel loose - it doesn't have to come off.

- Lock the gear **** grey side release button

* pull the side release button out using your fingers

* block the side release button in this position using a plastic strap (or something that feeds appropriate, ideally there is a plastic tool for this - see attached image for reference).

NOTE: You will need to make sure the release button stays in the "out" position so you can remove it and later install on another car.

- Pull up firmly to remove the gear **** out of its location.

- Now you will be looking at a plastic lever that stands out from the gearbox assembly. This has a hole in it at the top. This hole faces the driver door/left side of the car.

The challenge here is to make this hole face the dash. As there is nothing to be done to easily change its position there are two options that people use:

- twist it / rotate it.
- cut it off and rebuild it. (with a small screw and metal clips, etc. - more complicated).

NOTE: IF YOU DAMAGE THIS PIECE YOU WILL NEED TO CHANGE THE ENTIRE GEARBOX ASSEMBLY BECAUSE YOU CANNOT ORDER THIS PART SEPARATELY! PROCEED ON YOUR OWN RISK!!!

I chose to apply the first solution - Twist it/Rotate it.

Here is what you need to do:

Tools needed: Heat gun, patience.

- Get the heat gun and start applying heat to the plastic part. Once it is heated, SLOWLY and VERY CAREFULLY start rotating the plastic piece to the right (or left ) depending of where you are seated and how comfortable it is for you.

Do this gently and slowly (you don't want to BRAKE it!!!). You can do this once and get it right or you can take your time and do it in 2-3 steps. (heat then twist a little bit, heat then twist a little bit more , etc. until it stands facing the dash).

Once in the correct position (facing the dash) you’ve done the most important part of the job.

- Take the RS type gear **** and gently pull the front release button (similar to what you did with the side release button on the traditional gear ****). Be careful because the RS gear **** has two little springs that hold the button in place so you don’t want to loose them (they can be put back, don’t worry, just that they are very laborious to put back).

- Block it as well just like with the original gear ****.

- Put it on top of the twisted plastic part and push firmly until it goes in its position.

- Unloose/unblock the front release button (remove the plastic clip or whatever you used to block it)

- Rotate the plastic piece at the bottom of the gear **** in the opposite direction (left) to secure the gear **** in place.

- Unfold the leather and clip it to the console.

You are done! Enjoy your new sportier gear ****.

NOTE: there are various top labels for the gear **** if you are not comfortable with the RS one (There are S-tronic ones, no label at all, etc.)

Sorry for not adding pictures to the post - i was too nervous to look when it was done because i didn’t know it they will not brake it

I'd like to say that you have an amazing car, and amazing personal work drive. Thank you for sharing. Also wanted to say thank you for helping me mod my car. Because of you and your posts I was able to swap my T-handle shifter to the much better RS style shifter ****. That T-shifter drove me nuts and my car now feels like night-day improvement. Best mod EVER!

Thanks for being an inspiration and appreciate the guidance.

Also, congrats on such an amazing looking car.

I "upgraded" to 21" and went for a better stance (at least in my opinion)

Ehat happens when you hit a bump? It's cutting very close to the top of the wheel well.
