So now you slow down to 55-60mph, for the Max Miles/Gallon, while still maintaining a decent speed. That will stretch your MPG to above 30mpg and probably ensure you'll make the gas station.

I've driven several hundred miles on one tank. So after 100 miles or so, I look at the distance I want to go, vs how many miles I have left on the tank, and let's say that's 75miles more gas left than where I'm planning my gas stop. Then in another 100 miles, I'll look at the difference again, and let's say the difference now is only 50 miles, so I know I'll not make the 450 miles I had planned. So either I slow down 5mph or I stop for gas sooner. Interesting game to play when you're driving 10-12 hours a day.
