Default Cost of oil suprise

Was at the dealer today to get my overheating fixed when I went to the parts counter and asked what their price is for the oil used in my car. The parts guy quoted me $7/quart which is $2 less than the auto parts stores in my area. Did not expect that, so I will be getting my oil from the dealer in the future.

JR, you can get the correct oil for your car at W*mart for $5/qt, sometimes less.

Really? Their website shows the cheapest synthetic 5W-30 is $6.97 (out of stock now) and the cheapest in stock is $7.74.

By the way, is it okay to use any synthetic oil? For example, I have a few quarts of BMW branded synthetic 5W-30 (I think it's the same as Mobil 1). Can I use that or should I only use 5W-40?

Yeah, you're missing the VAG spec entirely on the 5W30 oil you mention. It doesn't meet the spec and isn't up for consideration if you are wanting to follow the engine mfr's recommendation.

Mobil 1 0W40 does meet the spec, has for years and it $25/5qt jug. Sometimes they price it at $22.xx on sale.

If the BMW oil you mention also meets a current VAG spec, it's obviously OK to use. It may meet the 504.00 spec.

I am not a proponent of blending oils and won't be the one to tell you it OK to do so.
