There are some companies which develop preamp boxes which can grab the digital signal before it reaches the factory amp. An example of this would be the Mobridge. The Mobridge works with the MOST-Bus found in BMW, Mercedes etc... It gives you an Optical Digital stereo output which you can then use to feed aftermarket equipment.

The other option is to grab the factory amp's output at the speaker level by tapping into the wiring harness. This is what it sounds like your installers have done, and it is also what I am doing in my BMW.
Yes, I peeked into the factory amp and looks like it is in line with your description. Now I just need to make sure with the multimeter. I am guessing that the voltages at speaker and amp out should be very different. Will update shortly.

Sorry for the potentially dumb question, but where is the factory amp located?

When you open the trunk, there is cover may be 1.5 feet by 1 feet with a twist off latch. The amp and the cubby to hold other stuff that you might want to put in there is in it.

Cool. Thanks for the pics!

Assuming the white cable is power, green is antenna and the others are the speakers?

Not completely sure yet.
1. There is the bunch of wires which I am sure are speaker wires.
2. There is a green plug (which I could not plug out yet). I am not sure what that is
3. There is a white plug and a black one right under it (the black one may not be visible in the pics). Both look like power. I will use my multimeter to figure it out soon. Stay tuned.
4. From the sgrorer's post on changing out the sub-there is a blue cable to the side. Sgroger had mentioned that that is the sub cable. I will check with him as well (or reread his excellent post with pictures).

Also there are 3 nuts that are holding the cubby down. I was going to try to unscrew them and get the cubby out of that little space. Maybe this weekend.

Regards

For sure an antenna:

The ones to the left are also antennas apparently.

I have some wiring diagrams I got from Audi - I just need to scan them.

Default Started on the install

Hello All:
Just starting on my install and trying to figure out the cables. Here is what I have found

1. The amp cubby is held down by 2 nuts. Unscrew them and the cubby comes out.
2. There are notches at the sides of the factory amp, When pressed, the amp detaches from the cubby. You will have to remove all the cables from the amp before detaching it.

Pictures below. Continued in the next post .....
