Default Failed BMW Experiment!!

Well, my 3-1/2 year 7-series experiment is over and I'm back where I belong!! Just bought a 2012 A6 3.0T Prestige. I have to say I'm as happy picking my way through AudiWorld almost as much as having the new car. Ya'll were always great answering all my question. So my first question is are there any downsides to getting the MMI and probably the TCM software updates. One of my dealers said they wouldn't do anything if there isn't a problem. The MMI one interests me the most in that many say that the sound quality was much better after the software update. Another dealer is more than happy to take my money, I just wondered if there truly was a downside. Updated software seems like a no brainer, but I don't want to end up worse than where I started

I also was asking about a NAV/maps update and I was blown away when they said it could be between $700-$800. That seems outrageous! Well over half of that cost is just the labor to sit and watch the computer upload the new data. I was wondering if I where to buy the updated SD card, could I spend the time and load the maps myself? It sounds like there is some kind of activation that only the dealer can do to get them working, but can I do the update, and then just have the dealership activate it?

Thanks again for all the help!!

Currently, the only legitimate way to update the maps in the early C7 is performed by the dealer. However, it shouldn't cost more than $400 based on reports which a crazy price as it is - $700-800 is nuts. Try another Audi dealer.

I have a 2016 A6 and I can download the map updates from the Audi website to a SD card and upload them to the car. Free.

First month of owning it I had to do the lower valve seal gaskets. That ran about $6000, then a random misfire that ended up being the ECU. Then mechatronics inside the transmission, etc. etc. I was sick of living in fear of what light was going to turn on every time I started the car!

The SD card is almost $300 and then a quoted 3-5 hours to download and activate. Just wondering if can do the hours of download on my own?

Only the MY2016+ has self download maps. Earlier years must obtain map updates from the dealer.

Nope. Not for a MY2012. Dealer only. As I wrote in an earlier post, try another Audi dealer - the map update software should run around $100 and labor about 2-3 hours. $400 or so all in.
