Default GAS MPG 3.0T something wrong at 17.8-18.5?

I love my 2013 A6 3.0T but I have been seeing many post and reviews of varios 3.0T and even when beat on they are getting 19-20.

I live in FL so it is flat albeit 80+ and I drive in 70% traffic and cruise at 75-80.

Bone stock I was at 19.5 on good day and 18.5 average. I use auto stop but it brings the average down when in heavy traffic only good for suburban long red light pauses I think.

ANyway after 1 year I have switched between Chipwerke, Stock and EPL tune. And all are still about the same.

CW is worse at 17.5-17.8
Stock I just babied the whole tank, used cruise control and eff bar to sit at 30mpg and I still got only 17.9

EPL I am at 18.

I am not racing much on any 1 tank. I might have a few WOT runs maybe 1-2 for a whole tank otherwise it is traffic then 70mph. I have noticed with cruise off my heavy foot just resting on the pedal will consume fuel even without accelerating so cruise helps but I expected to see 19-20 mpg doing that.

The Trip computer is SO FAR OFF. I am calculating by resetting the trip computer at each new fill up then next fill up I divide the total miles into the gallons needed to top off again. Granted top off might vary by .2gallons but I go to when tank is full.

I am getting about 309-325mpg just before the last bar and fuel light comes on. I fill up usually 17.8-18.1 gallons then.

I need to reset my trip PC because it always says I am getting like 19.8 at worse and sometimes says 24. Short term seems fairly accurate until I hit auto stop. then it shoots up. Long term is ridiculously off. I think it calculates by average speed and time driven not by fuel consumption. Because it will say 450Miles at full up and at half tank I am at 180-200miles driven but miles to go is still 270.

Any help as to why so far off?
Any tips for tunes and gas MPG is this normal I would not say I am racing, heavy footed for 10% of the tank but seems like it is 10% to low.

OP. That takes some doing, I don't know how to get that lousy mpg. Last 40k with CW, my long term is 28. Yes, the trip is off but only by the 3 or4 % that others have experienced.
You should check under the hood, I suspect that they accidentally installed the V10 from the R8😄.

With VCDS you can adjust what the computer shows for mileage, I think up to +/- 15% from what it leaves the factory at. That will not help your millage though, just get the car more inline with real life.

'City' driving can deviate a lot from the EPA rating, even by +/- 10 mpg because everyone's definition of 'city' driving is different. For example in my 2.0T CVT, I could make a cold start, a short 3 mile trip where I get stuck in traffic, or get stopped at every single traffic light, and with the A/C running hard to cool the car parked in the hot Florida sun. All bad things for mileage, so I have seen as low as 8 mpg on the short-term mileage display in these situations. Or I could drive at 50 mph still on 'city' streets and get lucky with no traffic and not have to stop at all for 10 miles. In these cases I have seen 34 mpg.

An easy way to tell is to look at your average speed on the display. The EPA rating for the 2013 3.0T is 18/27 and the city test has an average speed of 21 mph, and the hwy is 48 mph. If your average speed is below 21 mph, you will probably get worse than 18 mpg. If your avg speed is up in the 40s then you should approach the highway rating of 27 mpg.

As newmoon stated, when you reset your long term record, take a look at your average speed.

I average around 19-20 mpg with typical average speed around 30 mph. I agree that's the gauge of how your relate to everyone else.

I have seen my MPG be off by 3-6MPG from the trip. I dont trust the # at all.

I will check the AVG speed. but what if itis high like 35MPH but still low gas MPG.

I am getting 310-330 per tank for city.

Not long trips I can get 475 even 500.
SO it cant just be my left foot!!!

My S5 had that same engine, in a much lighter car, and I got about 23 MPG in mixed driving. My new S7, over the same routes, gets about 21 MPG. I can say that I didn't baby either car or try to improve fuel mileage.

I think you should see a bit better fuel mileage in the A6 than I do in the S7!

Well little more data. I rest my trip computers and drove home, same route I always do last night and this morning. Although my average, before reset, was around 21MPH I did observe on my hiway stretch home about 26MPH. I even cruised at 75-80mph with cruise control and fuel meter sat at 30+mpg. Once I hit the city, I take a local side street for 5-6 miles all stop signs and speed bumps but nice neighborhood drive through South Tampa, Hyde Park. It is quiet and relaxing and rarely traffic but I go under 30 and 50 at most on some stretches. My AVG speed dropped to 21.

I repeated my trip on way to work and observed my AVG MPH in the city part first was 17!!!! and once I hit the bridge, no traffic, I cruise at 80-82MPH with cruise open and the avg jumps to 24 but that is only 5min of a 25min trip so % wise it skews the average so much because it is 82MPH vs 17 but it appears 90%+ of my commute is 17mph average.

Also in these side streets on way home, I have auto start on. I counted it start stops on average 7-10x per stop sign as I wait and inch my way in line. On average my start stop feature only is off for less than 1-2 seconds at most. Most of the time it shuts off and instantly turns back on and I am waiting to go. I have to imagine that is not good for the engine. And being a Direct Inj. engine, similar to a diesel, quick stops like that are better to idle then shut off for gas mpg?

I am one bar away from the red bar and I am at 295 miles. I will probably eek out 305-310miles on this tank.

What are you guys seeing for heavy city? S7 owner what about you on a tank?

AgIAN I have an EPL tune stage 1 tune but I can't imagine it makes a difference if anything maybe helps and I saw similiar# stock like 18.5-19.2 at best when I babied it.

That sounds perfectly normal then. When you are in real city driving accelerating from a stop or idling, watch the current fuel economy bar and it is usually in the 0-15 mpg range. This is because obviously you burn the most gas when accelerating, and when you are idling you are burning gas but moving 0 miles. 0 miles divided by even a small amount like 0.1 gallons still equals 0 mpg.

Plus as you saw, it skews the average mph way down to around 20 mph. Like I said, if your avg mph is in the 20s, you should only expect around the EPA city rating which is 18 mpg. If avg mph is in the 40s-60s, you can get the EPA hwy rating of 27 mpg.

In fact if I divide these numbers by 18 gallons that is exactly what you are getting:

320 miles / 18 gal = 17.8 mpg city
475 miles / 18 gal = 26.4 mpg hwy
