how much weight can I reasonably put in the trunk
have a cross country move coming, me + wife < 300lbs
I have some small but heavy iron stuff.
how much more weight can a 2012 bear with without hurting the suspension?

Check your driver side door label. It should give maximum load weights. Be sure to use the tire pressures on the label for max load before you depart on your trip.

You might want to put some of the weight in the rear seat foot wells. It moves the weight forward of the rear axle and keep the center of gravity low. There shouldn't be any suspension damage. The spring will be compressed and it might hit the bump stops if you're traveling over rough roads. Allow more distance for braking and keep the speeds low.
