Default Looking to pick up an Audi

Good evening gents,

New member here! I've been stalking some A6s in the area and have narrowed my selection down. I'm just not sure if the newer model is worth the premium, and wanted to get some experienced insight!

Option 1: 2012 A6 3.0T Premium Plus Quattro with 49k miles @$30k

Option 2: 2014 A6 2.0T Premium Plus Quattro with 17k miles @$39k

Both are Certified pre-owned, and have clean carfax records.

All else considered, is 30k miles, 2 years, and the 2.0 worth $9k? Is one engine generally more reliable than the other?

Thanks in advance!!

Hi welcome! 2013 P+ 2.0 owner here

A6 is a great car can't go wrong with it. But I have to admit that I regret not picking 3.0 not only for additional HP but also performance parts upgrade possibilities down the road. Not much you can upgrade with 2.0 But again I don't track my a6 so for driving 12 miles to work and family trips now and then it's enough. Don't get me wrong still love my A6 but I'll be doing a chipwerke ( Performance chip ) for some HP gains. The other thing I would consider is finding a good Indy mechanic that works on Audi in your area so you can save on things like break jobs and service in general unless you can do it yourself.

I have the same model as TH3P. I find the 2.0 is more than enough car. There is the turbo lag to consider, but it's very slight. For me the huge advantage of the 2.0 you're looking at is the extra ~2 years of warranty.

Good luck!

My 2 cents and no offense meant to anyone (this is totally personal preference) -- drive the 3.0T and the 2.0 back to back as they are very different engines and an A6 with the 6 cylinder is going to feel/drive quite different from the 4. For my money 3.0T hands down as the A6 is a luxury car -- its not a small sporty sedan in the A4 idiom. The 3.0T engine is extremely smooth and powerful with no turbo lag issues and to me is responsive in the way that large American V8s were pre-emission controls. I had an A4 with the 2.0 engine as a loaner from the dealer and didn't care for it much after getting used to my /15 A6 3.0T. Good luck with your search.

I have the 3.0, and always feel like 2.0 engine is lacking (when driving loaners). However, that said, I think I would lean toward a newer near for resale and features. If you're focused on CPO, look for other used inventory at the Audi dealership and see if they can certify it. It's probably an extra $1-2K, but might be worth it if you're set on CPO.

All things being equal, engine, options ,etc here's one way to compute the value difference. Depreciation is the major expense you'll have and that is about 40-cents/mile. With 32,000 miles difference that would be about $12,800. In addition you have a couple years of factory warrantee (probably worth a couple thousand $$) with the newer car. 2012 was the first year of the new body style. I'd be looking for a low mileage 2013 or2014 maybe a Prestige with all the options you want. Don't forget to make sure it's been a "non-smoking" car!

Many factors to consider and here's my 2 cents. If you are not a lead foot and don't care too much about performance, the 2.0T is a great engine. Don't get me wrong, the 2.0T is no slug and it's quick enough for everyday driving, IMHO. It is more economical than the 3.0T in every sense and you get the same/similar luxury.
Me personally, I love my 3.0T and wouldn't have it any other way unless I can get the new Z06. It really depends on your personal taste and what kind of driving you'll be doing. Either way, you can't go wrong.

From my experience of owning an Audi A6 with 2.0T and 3.0T engines during the past 5 years, I have noticed that the fuel economy hasn't been much of a difference. The 2.0T 2012 A6 was my first audi and was surprised by how quick it was for being a 4 cylinder, but could obviously feel the lag coming from a car with bigger engine. However after driving it for 4 years in 90% city driving, I realized that the gas milage was not nearly as good as I expected. In fact it was similar to the Lexus GS350 I had. Fast forwarding to now, I have a 2016 3.0T and I do about 60% highway and 40% city driving. I noticed that the gas milage is actually better than the the 2.0T I owned in Seoul. My original thought would be because of it is city vs. high driving. However, I came to realize that the 2.0T was a bit under powered and I would stomp on the gas more frequently to change lanes. With the 3.0T I feel even more light footed since when you just tap on the pedal, the beast just moves! I am not a crazy fast driver, but I do enjoy speeding up sometimes. But most of the time i follow the speed limits. I know I have the power if I want/need it with the 3.0T and getting that power always gives me that extra smile i didn't get from the 2.0T.

Now the 2016 A6 2.0T is another story. Audi did a great job of bumping up the power and i feel it is not under powered. However it is not as spirited as the 2016 3.0T with the power increase.

Pick the car you feel you can enjoy the longest and have no regrets and not focus on the gas mileage. I don't know too many people who buy a luxury car worrying about gas mileage. Especially in the US where the gas prices are so cheap! (almost a 1/3 of the price I used to pay...)
Just my two cents...

I would first decide what Engine you really want, then you can focus your time on finding the right price.

Either way you go, I would always go for the lowest miles car so you do not have to own it out of warranty.
