I always like settings, but man, I find this useful and use it every day. Works on the first try 95% of the time.
When spray washing my car, I'll just keep my keys in the car or at least not in my pocket in the future. You have to have the key at the rear of the car for the function to operated, which is why it would never happen in an automatic washer.

It Takes Some Training
I just couldn't make it work on my 2016. I went to the dealer and three salesmen tried it on an A6 floor model and couldn't make it work. Their comment - "It hardly ever works on the A6, but works better on the new Q7." Back home, my wife tried it and succeeded each time she tried. Here's the procedure:
Place your shin in the middle of the car and 4 to 6 inches from the bumper with your foot on the ground. Swing your leg up at the knee - not too fast or too slow - until the tip of your shoe hits the under carriage. Bring the leg down to the ground and wait one second.
I succeed 90% of the time. My wife has it nailed 100%.
From reading the above posts, it may be different for other model years as it is continually being "improved".

My A6 MY12 built in early '12 has it too. I seldom use the feature but it works well. I have found that stepping and retrieving your foot, right behind the center of rear bumper, does the trick.
