My A8 was totaled out, looking for an A6
Hello A6 world, my wonderful A8 was marked as totaled from a rear end collision last weekend and I am going to be looking for a replacement car in the next couple of weeks.
I was hoping to get some advice in regards to purchasing an A6
PS, I am buying the A8 back for salvage value and will be repairing it, love the car, but the W12 drinks a lot of premium and my commute in not long enough to justify it as a daily driver.
I was hoping to get some advice in regards to purchasing an A6
- known issues
- engine recommendations and concerns (turbos burning out over time)
- maintenance concerns and wear items (The A8 had control arm bushings replacement needs)
- anything else of note.

The 3.0T supercharger is more reliable than the 2.0T turbo. Main issues are related to rotors and brakes wearing out too quickly or warping. I checked Consumer Reports and the other main issue is in-car electronics/MMI. Other than that it's a really nice vehicle.

i have had the 16 A6 3.0 almost 3 years and no problems with the MMI. I think a lot of problems with car electronics has to do with people not knowing how to use them properly.

If it were me - I'd say Motor Mounts (3.0T) leaking need replacement - second set. - Thermostats - maybe gunked up valves (Direct Injection stuff...) - I am having lower control arm bushing issues too - they are leaking.
that's it on mine really 83K Miles now. my engine does not burn an ounce of oil and is very reliable. (2012)

This does not have to do with the ability to use the MMI or the responsiveness. I think there are electronic issues. For example, the 2016 Q5 that I had, which has a very similar MMI interface, had to have a control module replaced as the side mirrors would no longer fold. I know it's not an A6, but it's the same interface.

Known issues in my experience are as follows: The motor mounts, brakes (rotors warping), MMI drive motor (the motor that raises and lowers the MMI screen), and gas cap locking mechanism.
Other than that its a fairly reliable and bulletproof.
Other assorted advice: Get a 3.0 (especially coming from a W12 you'll want a 3.0), Get the LED headlights, and wait for a spec that you like (there are plenty available, so wait until one you really like comes up for sale).
More debatable suggestions: Don't get a 2012 (first year problems) and don't get a 2016 (get a '17 for apple car play).
