Distantly related question for you guys. I've been a very bad boy, Despite my general rule of over-maintaining (read: 5K oil change intervals, 15K for engine air filters, once a year renewal of cabin air filter, etc) I have been remiss regarding tire rotations. /15 A6 3.0T with 19" sport suspension (Continental Pro Contacts) 2.5 years old/23K miles, I have never permitted the tires to be rotated. Reason is a bit of a long story -- car came with driveline vibration and took dealer inordinate amount of time to iron out (don't get me started on how incompetent and uncooperative selling dealer was -- I finally had to provide them with solution -- i.e. pull all 4 wheels/tires off car on lot with same wheels/tires and put on my car -- presto problem solved over their objections which they dropped when I threatened to escalate this to a higher authority -- this process took months so suffice it to say I have not visited selling dealer again). The replacement set of wheels/tires were perfect when installed and are still perfectly balanced and car rides as it should. I was spooked by the experience I had when got car and have been loathe to touch the wheels/tires. At this point my plan is to just leave them as they are and since I replace tires @ 4/32nds I figure I'll go another 7-10K miles, replace tires and after that adhere to rotation protocol. The tires seem to be wearing pretty evenly -- perhaps fronts are a 32nd or two less tread depth than rears. Am I OK with this or risking doing any damage to car? Thanks for your input.

Best,
Jeff

My wife says it's because there is more distance between the driver's seat and the trees.

The differentials should make up for a small variance in tire size. Every car with a half worn set of tires has slightly different sizes.

Thanks tenspeed. Wondering about your screen name -- cyclist in years past perhaps? I started on a Peugeot ten speed and my Pinarello Opera racing bike (circa 2003) has a nice Campagnolo Record triple gruppo -- 30 speeds! At my age, I use them all!

Best,
Jeff

I started on a Raleigh Super Course. I now have 4 Serotta’s in the stable, all with Campy Record. We should start a cycling thread!

I've gotten so used to Campy when I ride anything else just doesn't feel right. Did a great trip in NYS -- Finger Lakes. Beautiful and plenty of hills.

Original Poster here: Thank you for all of the replies. The new tire is installed (I just put it where the bad tire was--left front) and the car drives just as well as before.

I have been called tenspeed since the early 80's. I worked as a mechanic in Kodak's paper mill and they had a building pager system. My name is Jim Schwind and my foreman's name was Jim Swing. He always was being paged when he had phone calls. It got so that when people needed me, they called me tenspeed so I would answer the page. They even used the nickname on my work shirts. I did ride a number of bicycles but I could never afford a Schwinn.

Jim, that's fantastic! We have nicknames for some of the guys I work with but I can't post them on this forum!

Best,
Jeff

The Quattro drivetrain is primarily Rear Wheel Drive - front axle engages as needed - and pretty smoothly I might add.

On a RWD car the right rear tire does most of the work due to gearing, force angles, etc.

40% of the power is sent to the front wheels and 60% to the rear under normal conditions. It is a full time AWD system.
