My many unfortunate experiences with pothole damage on the wonderful roads of the Boston/Providence area over the last ten years has proven otherwise for me. I've found that hitting a deep hole with less tire flex places more shock pressure transmitted to the wheel. (Consider a stiff shock absorber and how it transmits rough road to the chassis vs. one with a softer setting). A pothole is more likely to damage a tire before destroying a wheel, no matter what the psi but a softer sidewall can save the wheel. A wheel costs more to replace than a tire. Been there, done that more than once. Sadly.

Sort of like the crumple zone applied to wheels and tires?
