Default Recommendations for an A6

I currently have a 1997 E300D Mercedes and am starting to look for something to move on to. There have been numerous people recommending to move to an A6 away form the Mercedes E-Class, (even on the Mercedes forums) so I wanted to ask y'all for some recommendations. I just crossed 211k miles on mine and am looking for something that has a good chance to do the same. What years, engines, transmissions ect. have turned out to be workhorses? I am currently able to do some simply DIY and would like to continue to, and wanted to know if it was possible to on the newer models. I know all the parts for Mercedes are serialized and it is a real pain, is it the same for Audi?

Also looking for opinions on diesel vs. gas. I am currently about 50:50 on and off the highway with a very rough estimate of 8k miles annually.

Thanks in advance!

Aggie, welcome aboard! Are you sensitive to fuel economy numbers?

Not particularly. Of course I would like to see higher MPG, but not looking for anything in particular.

Well, you're not doing much driving and I believe the supercharged V6 engine is liked for its general durability. There is also the 3.0L diesel and the turbo 4 cylinder engine which is boosted to 252hp.

Depends on which country the OP is in as to advice such as yours
OP, put your location under your logon name, otherwise advice from posters could be irrelevant as Audi has different versions of the A6 in different locations.

Let me also add that annual miles have a good chance at increasing to 12-13k.

Thank you, you have joined the club of posters who realize that Audi make hundreds of different versions for their world market and location is relevant for at least 80% of posts.

Experienced the 4 Cyl turbo with my wifes' former A4 Avant and it was decently peppy I suppose but that was a lighter and modestly smaller car. For me personally I like having the V6 supercharged in my A6 as it's quite a heavy car, about 4100 lbs (yes a bit lighter if 4 cyl) and I want it to have some scoot if I'm in that frame of mind. So I'd view the 4 cyl inadequate for the size of car and, being originally from the UK, I always look at gas prices in the US as cheap so 20 mpg or 30 mpg is largely immaterial, especially since my annual mileage is pretty low anyway. Would advise driving the V6 beforehand if in fact you were mulling the 4.
