Retrofitting 3 spoke steering wheel (heated) instead of 4 spoke
I am looking at retrofitting a 3 spoke steering wheel, that comes complete with airbag, and I am comfortable with fitting it. However, the one I am looking at has a heated steering wheel. Will this pose any problems in terms of connections or error messages? And will the heating work as plug & play (I have heated seats, if that makes a difference) or is there coding to be done?

If your original 4-spoke is heated, it should be plug and play. If not, your steering column may or may not have the power supply to connect the heating feature from the steering wheel. If you do have the power supply connector, you have to enable the heating feature using Vag Com.
The power supply connect on the steering column is shown on the photo lower left side.

Great, thanks! The original 4 spoke is non-heated so would be very surprised if it had the power supply. Would any error codes be present if installing the 3 spoke, accepting the non-functioning heating?

If you retrofitted the three spoke with the heating element in it and button on the steering wheel, but did not plug it in or code it, it probably wouldn't give an error in a scan unless you press the button. Once the button is pressed it would most likely give an "implausible signal" error which isn't a big deal and isn't going to affect the functionality of anything. The other possibility is the heated wheel button may resume the function of your previous * button.

I put in a flat bottom wheel from an A3. TRUST ME, save yourself the trouble with coding to get paddles\controls to work and just transplant the controls from your current wheel over.

Thanks for all the replies! The reason I wanted this specific 3 spoke wheel is because it has the rare leather covered airbag, the heated option is just a coincidence and wanted to be sure it doesn't cause any error codes. Not even sure what the current * button does, assuming I lose that functionality?
