Default Slots in key fob - purpose?

What are the slots on the edges of the key fob for? Looks like they are intended to clip into some kind of holder.

Searched manual and forum but haven't found anything yet.

Thanks

With some car models, the key is inserted into a slot in the dashboard. The key is then momentarily turned to start the car. I had three cars with this setup; an MB, a BMW and a VW Touareg. Those slots enable the socket to hold onto the key so it doesn't fall on the floor when inserting. The same key body is used for key-less entry setups.

And all along I was thinking it was a good pry point to split the housing for battery replacement.

With my 2016 A6, the battery is replaced by removing the physical key from the fob.

Same with my 2014..you take the key out of it then press that thing in the middle and it pops out
