Default Sluggish unresponsive gas pedal/transmission. What is happening?

2016 A7 TDI 3.0 with 30,000 miles

I've only had this car for a month. I was driving this morning and backed out of the garage. I put it in drive and the gas pedal when pressed half down is barely moving me. All of a sudden it kind of kicks in and rpms shoot up and I start going forward.
As I drove to work it seemed like pressing the gas took a few seconds to have any effect. I could still drive normally but everything seemed sluggish.
I noticed the check engine light had turned on. I called the dealership and scheduled an appointment for next week.
The service guy I talked to didn't offer up any possibility of what could be wrong.
Has anyone experienced anything similar?
If I get the code read at AutoZone will that tell me anything?
I'm kind of bummed out I already have to bring it in after a month of ownership.
Thanks

This is known as "throttle lag." Audi is apparently somewhat famous for it.

This is different from "turbo lag."

With throttle lag, when you press the throttle pedal (which is all electronic) the ECU waits for a time it decides before tipping the throttle plate open. You can actually record this with an app like Torque and an OBD2 Bluetooth adapter.

It is better in Sport Mode, but still annoying. Especially if you are trying to do spirited driving on back roads and rolling the throttle in after the apex, etc.

My 2012 A6 3.0T does this, it's the most annoying thing about this car. I've found that tiptronic manual mode completely eliminates this problem though, so if you don't mind manually shifting, you get to enjoy near instantaneous throttle response.

His car is a TDI. It has the TDI emissions modifications. Many of us have noticed some throttle lag with our modified TDI’s but the fact that his changed suddenly indicates that something is wrong. This along with the presence of a check engine light. Time to go to the dealer. Everything is covered. The emissions modification also includes an extended warranty on all emissions related problems. Your problem is very likely to be a NOX sensor. Won’t be a big deal. AutoZone might be able to read it however many of the Audi specific codes especially for TDI‘s are not available to be read with their generic scanners. You need VCDS or a dealer for that.

Just stopped at AutoZone. They read the code P0402
"Indicates the the exhaust gas recirculation excessive flow for a predetermined period of time. Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank1)"

Probably covered by the EPA warranty. I am sure the dealer will take care of it.
