Based off the replies on this thread I got today a US Mobile sim non LTE. For 2012 C7 since there's no LTE capability 3G service is fine. Activate the sim via website have it assigned a new number of course and pop it in . Once in i took the advice of another member and set the APN to "pwg" had roaming unchecked and I was good to go. Google Earth loaded up and thats how I knew I was good to go.

How much data did you purchase? 300MB or more?

Yes it is . Bought the sim when it arrived I activated and just got 300mb to test it out be sure to turn off the auto pay if you don't want the service for a while

Do you have an Audi Connect subscription active? How do you find the IMEI number of the car?

Go into tel/settings/connection/data connection/online status overview for the imei. No Audi connect for me

I just ordered Audi Connect so I could be upgraded to the 3G radio but it seems they don't do that anymore. That's disappointing but not as disappointing as Audi Connect itself. I think it really sucks. It's a shame Android auto is not available on the 2012s

Hoping someone can help clarify the carrier requirement for the Audi Connect. My vehicle is MY2018, is the system locked to AT&T or am I free to use any GSM carrier?

MY2016+ are locked to AT&T for Audi Connect via an internal sim.
