TDI MPG converting BMW owner
While covering at one of our distant locations, a 7 series owner was checking my A6 TDI out. Complaining about his 100 mile round trip to work, he was curious about my car, not knowing anyone with a newer diesel with whom he could talk. Well, he received an earful....:-)
Usually, I calculate my mileage at the pump but on the way back (about 80 miles on highway) I was fixated on the MPG display as I never really paid much attention, understanding that others say it may be overstated.
Yes, I realize it was less than bright to photograph my dash while driving 80 mph, but I couldn't help it. Obviously, the further I drove, the better the average (and, I just had to take another picture as the average increased)
. Pictures speak a thousand worlds and the 7 series owner is ....

Love mine!! I traded in my SQ5(The A6 is just as fast in most driving situations) for one and am totally in love. I have only averaged calculated 33MPG(display was around 37 on 3 tanks) on my 16, but I'm breaking it in pretty good. It was awesome yesterday when I was parked fueling up at the diesel pump and a big 18 wheeler pulled in next to me, I felt kind of special.

Hmm, I think these numbers are overly optimistic, or should be better stated as "short-term memory reset while on a mostly level freeway with cruise control enabled". That's the only way I can achieve the numbers in this thread in my TDI.
My long-term average in the computer is 17K miles driven, average speed 47 mph, 37.8mpg, however, I'm probably 80% highway, 20% city streets.

As my daily driver (about 60/40 highway/city) my average at the pump has been consistently around 32 MPG and, during the winter around 30 MPG. My only tank on predominantly highway miles (to pick up college graduate at other end of the state) resulted in a calculated value around 40 MPG. So, I agree the Audi computer may have a built in bias to show higher values, but I am nonetheless delighted with the performance of this engine….the pictures are simply positive reinforcement !! An engine that can motor a 4,000 lb vehicle with this sort of mileage: PRICELESS !!
