I'll have to figure out how to look at long term memory...but in the interim, thought it interesting to compare the onboard mpg calculator between the A6 gas and A6 diesel side by side. If the onboard calculator is being generous, perhaps it is consistently so.
The first is a picture of Mindsweeper's dash and the second is mine. Both of us were going 80 mph when we took the pictures and both the miles driven and estimated miles left on the tank are displayed, along with the mpg: 23.2 vs 46.9. Hopefully, I copied and posted the images correctly. If I goofed up, please check the post title "real life MPG" posted 4-23-13.

Long term is 28.2 and was last reset at 5K so it is representative of my car after it was broken in and a Chipwerke added at that time.

However, thought it interesting to compare how the DIS calculated mileage differs between the gas and diesel. In this case most of the variables were identical: speed, A6 (though diesel slightly heavier), the 'calculator used', listening to the Lithium channel and engine life. The only difference is that the air conditioning was on in the diesel and unlikely so in the gas (see outside temperature display), which should have detrimentally affected mileage for diesel. So, if the DIS exaggerates as it likely does, then the exaggeration should be consistent. This is not much different than a scale that is alway 10 lbs off: one can still detect changes in weight consistently.
That the DIS suggests that I could expect 600 miles on the tank (213 + 425) is accurate as, except in the winter, I can achieve 600 miles on a tank. So, DIS may be somewhat legitimate.

And for anyone else who doesn't know:
DIS on the leftmost car info 'tab'
Press the Menu button on the left steering wheel spoke
Select On-board computer
Roll the wheel to scroll through the screens including:
- instant gas mileage
- short-term memory mileage
- long-term memory mileage
Press and hold down the wheel ('OK') to reset the mileage. The short-term memory also resets when you haven't driven for 2 hours.
Also if you're interested, press the Menu button, then select Efficiency Program, and it will tell you how many gal/hr things like the A/C, defrosters, seat heaters, etc use.
