Thermostat and Water Pump Replacement?!
Am I understanding correctly that the water pump and thermostat will eventually need replacing on the C7 due to design flaws? If so, anyone know if the same is true for the C7.5? I'd be a bit surprised, a bit angered, and even a little suspicious if these parts need replacing on either.
My 03' BMW 330xi (E46) needed the water pump and thermostat replaced (with updated, redesigned versions) at around 45k miles because the originals were poorly designed.
How could another German car, over ten years later, still have the same exact issues? Don't the engineers who design the parts for these vehicles learn anything from mistakes made by their fellow German car makers? Or would such an assumption be unreasonable to make?

Sorry about that, yeh, guess it sort of was. Swear I was surfing around this morning and found a few references to it. Now though I'm having difficulty finding what I was reading. A few people indicated they'd needed to change them before 100k miles. If I find the pages again, I'll post the links..

I have a 12 Prestige and 3 Weeks ago my Thermo failed. Luckily I was still CPO so it was a 85 Dollar repair. I believe that the Thermo Has a recall and it covered later 12's and 13's. Be that as it may - my VIN was not under that recal batch and mine died at 63K miles or so.

Yes, early C7s had the tstat and water pump recalled but that was rectified a number of years ago. A failure now would be indicative of someone not getting the recall done. I don't see why you should be concerned.

Thank you. I don't see why the C7.5 wouldn't have the new version of these parts installed. Sounds like us 16' and 17' owners are all set.

You can easily tell which water pump you have by looking at the housing right below the SC pulley. If its all metal you have the upgraded unit...if plastic then you should worry.
The T-Stat is completely buried under the SC so no way to really tell unless you have paperwork that it was done.
I suppose if you have an upgraded water pump you should worry a little less about the T-Stat.
I have a 12 with an all metal pump so i think i am OK for now. I purchased a 2 year drivetrain warranty with the car just for good measure for a catastrophic failure of some kind.
In 7 months of ownership i have had zero issues and this is becoming my favorite car i have ever owned.

not all early C7's were on the T-Stat recall. I was not - I checked very carefully and my SA verified that my VIN did not need it....I did get the Water pump replaced per that recall. No T-stat tho...It probably needed one as I had to do it a few weeks ago...but oh well.

Reviving old thread... I don't recall my thermostat is ever recalled or replaced. In winter it takes over 20-25 minutes for coolant to get to operating temperature. My 2003 C5 A6 takes about 5 minutes. Is 20-25 minutes normal? I can sense the engine lacks power before it reaches operating temperature. Any advice is appreciated.
