Default Wait times?

Hello all,

First-time Audi buyer considering getting an A6 Prestige on President's Day weekend. I see that some of you recent buyers had to wait more than three months to pick up your car; others seem to have received theirs much sooner. Does anyone know how long I should expect to wait for a pretty much standard Phantom Black Prestige with black + natural wood interior?

Also, some of you seem to have received below-invoice prices. I imagine the chances of below- or close-to invoice prices are higher as you pile on the options? Any strategies you could suggest while I sit down to haggle on Saturday would help.

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Phantom Black's are probably the easiest to find, without having to factory order it. You have probably a better shot at getting a sweet deal on a car that's sitting on the lot, than you do ordering it, in my opinion. There's more bargaining room. If you are ordering the car, they know you want it... You're ordering it and willing to wait 3 freakishly long months. They have the upper hand... But if it's sitting right there and the price they quote you doesn't sound like music to your ears, then decline it, and see if they're willing to go lower. It might not be by a lot of $, but it's still something... Go online and check out the inventory for the dealerships around you. You may find that car sitting on a lot nearby... I ordered a Havana Black Metallic car, which I couldn't find anywhere. Even after I had ordered it, I still kept checking around to see if they had that color with the specs I wanted. I couldn't find it... Would have loved to make a deal that way... Oh well...

Hi,
In Canada (Ottawa specific) my wait time was 3.5 months. 2 weeks delay was due to snow storm an car was waiting in port for 2 weeks.

But dealer would search inventory first, and if there is a car somewhere & not sold then it can be shipped to you and wait is only shipping from within your country. I was told it can now take between 3-4 months in Canada, maybe bit faster in USA. I printed invoice and dealer was ready to see $500 over invoice, hard to negotiate in Canada better deals, not to mention cars are more expensive than US. Anyway check if dealer can find your car in inventory that will make wait less considerably.

After buying about 20 new cars in my lifetime, I've learned a bit about how this works. Dealers have to factor in floor plan interest of "in stock" cars to their actual net cost. Ordered cars don't have that internal cost so typically, they have more room to work. It's in and out with no inventory carrying charges.

That said, with interest rates so low these days, it probably doesn't make a heckuva lot of difference either way to the dealer. Or to the buyer when negotiating. On the other hand, there's definitely something to be said for immediate gratification if you can find the car equipped the way you want it.

It makes a significant difference where you are on wait time. For example, I'm in Phoenix and the car needs to travel for 1 month from Germany via Panama to San Diego. And there is only 1 ship/month to San Diego, so sometimes you have to wait a few weeks longer just to get it shipped.

I ordered early November and my car is in port tomorrow (yea!). Thats 1 week ahead of the schedule set when the boat left Emden Germany. It should be in Phoenix, prepped, and ready for me by end of February latest.

Thanks for the tips so far! Quick question about buying a car off the lot: are these cars that others have been test-driving? At least one of the testers at my local dealership looked pretty beat-up, especially the carpets.

Since A6 in Canada there are not too many on the lot, my dealer had a demo car, that is test drive normally happens, but you need to ask if you found a car on lot or inventory what is the mileage?
Mine when it came had 12Kms as they tested it.

But mileage is important to check and if car had over 30 then it was probably driven by at least 1 customer.

Thanks again, folks — I now have the specific car of my needs on order, with an exact 3-month wait time (who else thinks this is completely nuts? I'd have expected Audi to have this figured out by now). There were a handful of cars around California with an option or two more or less than I needed, so I decided to take the ordering route. Finding my employer on the supplier list was a big help towards getting a below-invoice price (and if yours isn't, be sure to check for subsidiaries and parent companies!).

My dealer is saying 2 months. He found one in the cue or whatever it's called that is still configurable. Does that cut down on the total time?

Also as a FYI for anyone that's curious, he said 2012 order cutoff is end of Feb. They'll start ordering 2013's in May with an Aug/Sept delivery. Seems awfully long but that's what he said.

That's how I started off this order as well. The dealer said there was one in the production process that still has some options configurable, and the wait time would be 2-2.5 months instead of 3-4 months. After configuring and ordering, they're now giving me an estimate of 2.5-3 months (mid-end May), which I guess is still better than 3-4 months.
