What is rate of oil consumption on 3.0 2012 A6
My MMI is telling me to drive to my dealer and add a quart of oil
Changed oil at 5,000 miles and now have 12,000 miles on car when this flashed on screen, thus I have burned 1 quart in 7,000 miles. Is this normal rate that 2012 A6 owners are getting? Pretty cool warning display that Audi has to make you aware of this that says "Please add 1 quart of oil. You may drive to dealer"
To bad there is no dipstick to get a better reading.

You are not alone with this issue. When I asked my dealer, he said that 1 quart of oil for every 2K miles Audi considers normal. This is crazy. But hey you got 7K miles till 1 more quart became necessary. In my mind it is normal. I add one quart between every 10K interval, that is apprx 5K miles after each service.

With 39k miles on mine, I'm burning a quart every 3-4k miles...had 2 oil consumption tests done previously and both came back "normal". Even though I'm less than 10 minutes from my dealer, i just always keep a quart of Mobil1 OW-40 in the trunk now...never know where I might be when the oil warning light comes on.
PS - Guess us C6 3.0T owners are fortunate to have dipsticks.

I guess I am doing OK than by just burning a quart every 7,000 miles.Just hope it doesn't burn at an increasing rate as more miles are added, if so, I guess I will buy a dip-stick and load up the trunk with extra oil. Than again, maybe the car is still breaking in. Time will tell. I will be optimistic.

My previous Audis, all turbos, burned oil at the rate of a quart every 2K to 5K, improving as the car got older and broken in. This does appear to be normal for Audis. My current 3.0t doesn't burn any at all, but that it likely just luck of the draw. None of my previous cars had any engine issues, so the oil burning doesn't seem to cause any ill effects.

Pretty much all manufacturers claim that anything less than 1qt/1K miles is 'within specs'. This does not mean that it's the norm for their cars to do this, but that's how they avoid doing warranty work on otherwise properly operating cars. My 3.0 T has 4K miles and still shows full on the MMI. My previous audi ('98 a4 2.8 30v V6) would burn about 1qt every 3K miles; dealer never did anything about it until it started visibly dripping oil from the rear camshaft seals right around 40K, just out of warranty. After lots of arguing, Audi picked up 1/2 the cost to replace them (back then, about 1,200, most of it labor). THanks to that stunt I avoided VW/Audi for the next 10 years, but I couldn't resist the C7A6. So far, so good...
I had an FX45 that burnt 1qt/2-3K miles; dealer did nothing, but I never had any other issues with the engine over about 80K miles I owned it. None of the other nissan products I've had over the years burnt any oil over a regular oil change interval. I guess what I'm saying is that a lot is luck of the draw more than anything.
For the curious, all my cars are broken in following the manual (mostly) and I tend to buy 'uncirculated' cars even if I have to wait to get them rather than a car that's been demoed and redlined a few times before.

I think the S/C engines have less oil consumption issues vs the Turbo 4's.
If you have to add a quart every 5k miles, that's something I'd be happy with on my 3.0T
My 11 2.0T Avant was getting to where I needed to add oil between 2500-3000 miles.
I'm only at just under 2k on my 3.0, so it's hard to give a full report until I get more miles on it.

The oil burning issue has been kicked around on this forum and many others. My 2013 A6 2.0t has only 33 miles on it so I can not speak to oil consumption with this car. My 2012 Q5 2.0t used no oil in 17k miles. I always do a soft break in, first oil change between 500-1000 miles then at 5000, and then follow with every 5000 miles there after. I have done this with every new car from various manufactures for many years and have had no oil consumption issues do to burning. Leaking on my two Junkxus RX350 was a major issue! Very low mileage the, the timming chain cover seal(s) leaked like crazy. Lexus replaced the RX, many issues beyond oil leaking. The replacement was worse. The Junk was replaced by an X5 and no oil consumption at all. I change the oil In between the included service.
