1999 A6 cold start
This morning I went to start my AUDI A6 and it was a very hard
start. It took three times and completely depressed gas pedal to start
the car. The temp was around 9 degrees overnight and the car had not
been driven in 2 days. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks.

Re: First off.....
Depressing pedal fully is to unflooad an engine only. Audi (even on 2000's) says you might have to depress the pedal slightly (opens throttle valves and allows more air in) to start at times.
This is clearly bogus info on the 2.7T and 4.2 since they are completely drive-by-wire, and thus pressing the pedal does nothing. Might be valid for the 2.8.

Re: 1999 A6 cold start
This happened to me ONCE. It was not below freezing, but I hadn't driven the car (99.5 2.8) in several days. I thought it wasn't going to start at all, but finally after full throttling it a couple of times, it did start. Had never happened again. Can't explain it.

Re: 1999 A6 cold start
Thanks Lora. Come to think about it, both times my car has done this, it had been sitting for a few days and it was cold. I am going to take my car into the dealer on tuesday awaiting the answer to why this is happening. But I have a feeling it will be something like: No problem found.

Owner's Manual says do not depress pedal
My owner's manual for my 99.5 2.8Q says
Do not depress the accelerator pedal
while starting. This applies at any outside
temperature.
(page 77)
The manual does say you may have to depress the pedal AFTER starting the engine, but this is only for a VERY HOT engine.

Re: 1999 A6 cold start - Known Problem
There is a known prob. here - read the Tech Bulletins.
I had the same problem with my 99 A6Q. The dealer performs the fix at no charge (involves a new thermostat and a few other things to make the engine run hotter and reduce carbon build-up...so they say. So far it's work great on my car. I've had several very cold (-20F) days and nor problems starting the car, even after it has sat for the weekend.
