Default 2001 A6 2.7

I am wonering if aybody has answers for my problem. I've noticed that when I slow down and than excellerate, sometimes the car slams into a gear. It is like the transmission does not know what gear it should be in. Just an FYI I have an APR chip and love the performance boost. The chip made no difference concerning the downshift problem.

Default Use search and see my thread from a couple of weeks ago...

Audi has designed a new module to address this although they didn't think it was a problem in the 2001 model.

Default Re: 2001 A6 2.7

Steve Bollinger has explained this phenomenon as drive train windup, and said it's common to all AWD and 4WD layouts. I can't recall his elegant explanation in detail, but my understanding is that when you apply, release and suddenly reapply power, it creates like an elastic band effect through the bits and pieces of the Quattro. FWI, I could even induce what you're describing in my old FWD ES300 if I caught it the wrong way.

Default Possible that it's the often discussed "thunk"...

Do a search on "thunk" in the A6 and S4 forums. Discussed many times and the concensus seems to be it is not harmful. Disconcerting? Definitely.

Yeah, it's still an issue with '01 models--I sometimes get it a bit in stop & go traffic.

Default Yes, it has worked...on the other hand..

Much smoother shift in the decel then accel situation. I don't baby it at all anymore and have not had the thunk happen since the new module was installed. On the other hand, the driver's window seal is still worse than before they tried to fix it. Much more wind and road noise than before. I'm going to probably take it to Pacific Audi (formerly Vasek-Polak) to see if they can do a better job. I do think these cars make more wind noise than the BMW and MB competition. Something about the design.
