2004 2.7T A6 "Whoosh" Sound After APR
 

Hi all, I have a quick question:

I just got my TB/Water Pump service taken care of a couple hundred miles ago along with a upgraded Samco Throttle Body Boot and Bosch 710N DV's.

I then got a APR 91/93/100 Octane tune a few nights ago. Everything has been great until today, I was pulling out of work onto the highway when I reached about 3000 RPM's and the car started having a large "whoosh" shound and no more power. It felt like it ran out of rev and it didn't want to change gears. I pulled over to listen for sounds and heard none. Then I revved it a bit and there was no "whoosh", only under load while in gear.

Once I get up to speed as long as I keep the revs down, there is no issue and all is good. Does this sound like a boost issue to anyone? When I got home I took off the engine covers to look around but didn't see anything out of the ordinary/ripped. I hate to ask this question, but I have yet to get my Bentley manual (on its way) and haven't weighed the options of a VAG-com yet. Thanks for any replies in advance. I'd like to look into this further and fix tomorrow if at all possible.

I forgot to add that there is no CEL.

TBB small tear which will only expand under load, or intercooler hose not tight and moving.

I agree with Ming, same thing happened to me.

TBB huh? I bought the Samco silicon one from Avalon Motorsports and it probably doesn't even have 250 miles yet...I will certainly check that. It seems like it could be boost leak (even though this is my first turbo car and i have NO experience with such issues) as it is a loud whooshing sound.

dont press the car, try to stay out of too much boost. could overspin the turbos, causing some problems.

Same thing happened on my girlfriend's 1.8T when we chipped it. Couldn't figure it out, but the car ran fine and no CEL. Unlike you, she did not lose power.

Turned out to be a bunch of hoses that needed to be replaced, not too bad a fix - but the 1.8T is a much different engine than the 2.7T as far as layout in the bay.

I would start with the TBB like was suggested. Also look at the braided hoses, anything rubber going to the intake, spider hose, etc. My gf's problem was mostly caused by a hole in an oil line that looked fine when you looked at it, but if you turned the hose just a little you'd see a very large tear. It would close and then the pressure moving through it would open it up and it was actually air coming out of the engine I think, not going in....

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. With the help of a local forum member, we looked around this morning and found it to be that the Throttle Body Boot was off only about a 1/4". He explained to me that even at that small amount is more than enough to throw everything out of whack. We re-adjusted it and 2 minutes later I was back in business. It happened to me after I did my APR BiPipe :)

Didn't tighten the clamps to the intercoolers tight enough and one blew off under full throttle while shifting between 4-5. Sounded like a friggin bomb went off under the hood <yeeeoooow) !

Didn't cause any problems after reattach <whew>
