Default Audi dealer-guy report: Audi vehicle shortage due to 4.2 engine production constraints.

Dealer-guy tells me he can't get A6 4.2's, A8s, S4s, allroad 4.2s or A6 Avant 4.2s in anything CLOSE to his demand requirements. Says the car shortage owes to Audis inability to produce the 4.2 V8 engines quickly enough.

Wouldn't you think they'd have though of that in advance?

Default Well, if VW AG could predict the future better, they'd probably be in finance and not make cars

If you've ever run a product or company, then you might realize that mistakes can actually be made about future demand.
GM was underselling H2s because demand was higher than predicted: "Wouldn't you think they'd have though of that in advance?"
There have almost always been 60+ day supplies of any Saturn you name, because they suck: "Wouldn't you think they'd have though of that in advance?"
There are never Baked Lays in the supermarket because FritoLay can't make enough of them: "Wouldn't you think they'd have though of that in advance?"
Pretty much the silliest thread I ever saw here . . .

Default Forecasting demand is certainly challenging....BUT...

...when you do as Audi did and add V8 engines to S4s, A6 Avants and allroads, you don't have to be all THAT good at forcasting to figure out demand will be... UP. (Same's true with Baked Lay's, by the way.)

And another thing, d!psh!t...if you think mine is the silliest thread you've read here, I can only assume you've missed DOZENS of my prior musings.

Default VW is making a lot of mistakes these days. I've never been impressed with their supply chain either.

I hope they turn it around.

Default Did they move *all* the V8 cars to the new 4.2?

Even the A6 4.2? I knew the S4 and Allroad had the new motor but I didn't think the A6 or A8 were using them.

Perhaps they share critical parts.

Default If the Boston area dealers are any indication, there are plenty of 4.2's around..

in the new A8L, S4, RS6 and A6/S6 Avant. I have no idea of wait time for customer spec'd cars, but plenty of the ones mentioned on dealer lots and in showrooms around here.

Default

Is it possibly due to problems in ramping up enlarged engine plant in Hungary??

Default Touareg, A8, Allroad, S4. Shortages of the block itself.

Not an easy thing to increase production, since the assembly line has a very fixed speed due to the high degree of automation, planning and cost to build another production line.
