Default Best year for the A6 4.2?

So what's the best year for the 2000-2004 A6 4.2? I'm mostly concerned with reliability, but hear that by and large the 4.2 is pretty solid. I know that some of the features changed over the years, with the later models having fewer standard options. So are there any years in there that were better than others?

Default they're all good

I don't like to get first-year, so I'd avoid 2000's, but there's no basis other than preference for that. I'd say 2002-2003 would be best as they have some of the newer things that 00 and 01 dont have, and 04's would cost more for no reason other than they're newer

Default I think 2002-3 would be it, Symp II radio then and full sport pkg. I'm perfectly happy with my 2000

though, so keep an open mind and whichever one you get, make sure you can get access to all service records. MIne was orignally purhcased locally and stayed here in SoCal the whole time. Great shape.

Default My 2000 2.7T has no ESP. Do later models have ESP as standard?

If so, that would be a good reason to go with the 2000.

Default I could be wrong

but I think all 4.2's had esp standard, if not then only 2000 had it as an option. and whether you want esp or not is a matter of preference. I want ESP for day to day driving, and none in snow/ice and track, thankfully there's a handy button to turn it off.

Default 2nd. I looked at a number of 02 and 03s with peeling interior trim pieces...

I've also noticed in a number of B6s, so they must have gone with a cheaper supplier in 02. This was a cost cutting measure that went along with fewer standard features.

Default Does that handy button work as well on the C5 A6 as it did on the B5 S4 ?

If so, I'll pass.

Default I'm not sure what you mean.

my esp is off when I hit the button, not just relaxed.

Default Then it is different to the ESP found in the S4...

It is impossible to fully turn off the ESP in the S4. And it doesn't just come back on when you touch the brakes as does the Porsche. What's more, it can straighten the car up and force you off the road if you aren't careful.

I don't have it on my early-2000 S4 (or on my 2000 A6 2.7T). I'm grateful for that. Within the S4 community, those early S4's without ESP are definitely preferred.

My Porsche has a much better system. With that you can even track the car without it interfering if you are smooth.
