Ive replaced the control arms twice
tie rods
axles, cv boots
brake lines, brake pads, rotors
belts
oil pan (grand central parkwaysfault)
etc
in all ive spent about $1k doing all that thanks to ebay and doing my own work, I love hearing "my audi is so expensive to keep up, blah blah blah"
I laugh
get a repair manual, put your hands to work, mechanical inclination is hardly the issue, much of it is just reading and common sense, I started doing this when I was 16 (20 now) and it hasnt failed me yet. and as for "time to do it" I make time, sometimes I do this **** at 1 am, if you got a friend to help you and drink a few beers with, the time flies and you enjoy doing it.

We've updated the results for the C5 A6 to include owner experiences through March 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:
2003: 200, worse than average
2002: 124, about average; actual repair rate probably higher based on the 2001 and 2003
2001: 192, worse than average
2000: 205, worse than average
Sample sizes range from very small--for the 2000 and 2003--to just five short of the minimum for a full result--for the 2001. On the site these results are all asterisked and visible only to participants.
A big thank you to JET, this forum, and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

395 Audi A6 owners now signed up--which happens to be the same for the BMW 5-Series. A good start in both cases, but more are needed to provide precise results for all model years.

We've updated the results for the C5 A6 to include owner experiences through June 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:
2003: 230, very small sample size
2002: 147, marginal sample size
2001: 233
2000: 173, very small sample size
Worse than average in all cases. The variation from year to year is probably mostly due to the sizes of the samples--only that for the 2001 is sufficient for a full result.
A big thanks, once again, to JET, this forum, and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in November and February. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

You're joking, right? Even if a 2001 Avant was worth less than $4,500, is its MPG low enough to qualify?

Ahh god I am actually trying to purchase one of these before the end of the year but you guys got me ****ting bricks. I had a 99 2.8 that was totaled (good thing because the car was taking me down lane broke Cats, alternator, water pump, heater core, hoses, always overheated, brake pads, resurfaced rotors and I only had the car for 9 months) I was hoping it was because it was an old model so I was planning on getting an 2004 but it seems otherwise, what do you guys think?

We only have results for one year of the C6 so far, the 2006. But judging from the A4s, Audi seems to have vastly improved reliability around 2005 or 2006. Any chance a C6 would be within your budget?
Updated survey results next month. We're going to start providing new stats for the odds of requiring no repairs and the odds of getting a lemon. These require larger sample sizes, so additional participants would be evem more helpful.
