Cat update: Finally went out and tapped them with a rubber mallet..

Alright.. Say I decide to gut my main cats.. Won't there be some performance
issues with having large open cavities in the exhaust? In my mind at least, that would create some sort of flow issue (exhaust from a small pipe flowing into a large space, then being forced into a small pipe on the other side.)

However, it is legal to replace the cats with Magnaflow ones (CARB certified)
A friend did this on his A4 2.8, at a massive saving compared to OEM. About $400 for a pair, welded in, he paid.
They have a huge catalogue and must have something that will fit.
Considering doing this on the Jag as the Magnaflows are both more effective and less restrictive than the OEM ones, and two cats can be replaced with one modern one.

Most of the cylinder evacuation pulses are controlled via the manifolds. Yes, some
velocity may be lost in a NA engine by changing the volumes, but it's a bit of a mixed bag since the cats impede good pulse waves anyway. High flow cats are probably the best way to have your cake and eat it too;-)
