ContiExtremes UPDATE...(Pay attention, rally)...<long>....

Tires (P255/40ZR17... not "YR" as shown in TireRack's listing) balanced and mounted early this morning. They sure look great on the car...more aggressive tread and directional "sipping" pattern. Sidewall pattern's more aggressive, too.

MOST IMPORTANT...since it was discussed at some length (ad nauseum?) earlier this week, a point about buying "Road Hazard" extended coverage "insurance" plans. RS6 owner, "rally," argued that because TireRack did not offer a road hazard policy for sale on these tires (and DID offer such a "deal" on the $120-more-expensive-per-tire
Michelin Pilot AS...for roughly $130/set as I recall), that the Continentals must be inferior. He said otherwise, they'd have more confidence to "back their tires" better.

Now...the REST of the story... Each tire installed had the following notation on the manufacturer's label: "12 month free replacement road hazard coverage." Gotta like that word "free," eh?

Paying for any "extended service contract" is, in my judgement, most often a bad move. Essentially, you are placing a bet against a manufacturer who has WAY more knowledge than you of the frequency of failure of their products. And they certainly have no intention of losing money on any such deal. It is always possible, of course, that your "product failure" will fall outside the manufacturer's norm, in which case, you win. To be clear, however, the odds of this are NOT in your favor...evar!

One more cool feature of the ContiExtremes..."Rim protector on low aspect ratio tires to reduce damage to alloy wheels." Essentially, this is a "rub strip" near the bead of the tire which would come in contact with curbs and such well before the allow wheel did. Kinda cool, and I had not even heard of such a feature on tires before.

By the way, the following picture doesn't do the 40-series tires justice....they look TWICE this wide!!

I always buy the best tires available, no matter what the cost is, because my passengers and my car are worth the extra bucks.
Tires are an insurance policy.

Read the report on TireRacks website where the Michelins are "The gold standard by which all the other tires are judged".

I had my experience with Contis when an original bubbled the sidewall on the S6 at 3K miles.

I took it to the General Tire dealer as requested by Continental customer service.
They had no road hazard program and would replace my tire for $100 of my money!

I told the Continental rep (on the phone at the General dealer) to stuff their replacement warranty and went and bought new S-03's (the gold standard at that time).

I will never buy a Continental tire again.
If a dealer trys to sell me a Continental shod car I will walk if they can't get me a better tire.

Michelin is certainly the "gold standard" for what they charge for road-hazard protection!

It's a Discount Tire program. The tire dealers charge for the program, just like TireRack.
 

$10 a tire is not expensive.

Why don't you post the wording from the Conti brochure that states a nail or foreign intrusion into the sidewall of the tire will be free replacement.
I've never seen a man. warranty that comprehensive.
