Default Coolant leak hours after turning off

I have a 2001 2.7t with 175,000 miles. The timing belt and friends (incl. water pump & thermostat) were installed at 142,000 miles.

I now have a leak at the front of the motor, above the snub mount. It only leaks 2-3 hours after the car is shut off and then only leaks for a short time.

Any thought what that would be? Any chance this can be fixed without going to service position?

Any help appreciated.

Above snub mount is the water pump. My 2.8 did this a while back. No leaks until shut off overnight, then would be small puddle under front. Never determined exactly what it was as it self fixed and stopped leaking on it own in a few days. Love when they do that and hasn't leaked in 9 months.

When it stopped leaking was the weather warming up? Mine began leaking and then got worse as the temps dipped outside (cold contracts rubber, heat expands). In anycase, it's the waterpump on my 2.8L as well and my TB Kit with WP was replaced 5 years/64k miles ago. Now I have to do the job again. This time I didn't buy the kit from blauparts since I don't know the quality of the parts before hand. I purchased all parts seperately on RMEuropean. Hopefully this time around the waterpump will last longer.

Like 98Quattro, my water pump leaks ONLY when it's very cold outside (10-15 deg F or lower) and then only for a short time a few hours after the car was run. The leak is the same as yours, OP, front of the motor on the passenger side.

I don't know what replacement brand the pump was (I didn't do the job) but it's only been three years and 15,000 miles since the TB job in which it was replaced was done. It must be Chinese suck brand.

This type of leak is just as likely to be the gasket as it is the seal.

In either case, it should not be ignored.

Mine leaks passenger side and I can see pink residue on the alternator and to the back and above it. The leak is small, maybe a tablespoon or 2 when it gets cold. Do I need to go to service position to see the source. I cannot see a leak from below just the pink residue on the edge of the oil pan and the trans tubes going to the radiator.

rule of thumb, i never ignore coolant or oil leaks untill i know EXACTLY where they are from

then when i find out its from something non mission critical i take my time (ie valve covers or even this stupid CTS o-ring that randomly leaks )
