Default Help Looking for advice Please read this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I am thinking about getting a 2001 A6 Quarto and I need some help deciding. This car looks as new as the day it was made, however there is 53K on it so it has no warranty (crazy they only offer 4 year). I can get this car for a real good deal...... But do you guys think it would be wise with no factory warranty? I can get one from my bank I guess but will that be as good?

Second I am also thinking of getting a 2001 0r 2002 Volvo s60 with the 2.4T motor, looks nice and has 37K on it with 5 months of bumper to bumper and 3+ years of engine and drive train. And I can get as good of a deal for these as well.

Please offer any advice and or things I need to look at on the Audi to help me out here, I would like the best car I can get and I like both these cars a lot.

Thanks guys
Myrddin

Default I bought one with 75K and had the car checked out and did carfax report..

My mechanic said the car is in near perfect cond. Carfax report came back great!!! Now just doing some scheduled repairs just to be safe. Timing belt all rollers and tensioners, water pump, thermostat, serptine belt. also have the tranny flushed and refilled with redline synthetic. Getting car back on Monday, One more thing their also doing the 0032 tranny recode and window and lock recodes!!!!

Bottom line get the car!!!!!!!!

Default Hmmm, wise? I would say buying cars is generally not wise...

If you are prepared to spend about $1500 a year (unless you like to do brakes, tie rods ends, timing belt, etc.) on maintenance and not cry about it or feel cheated because your expectations are in line with Hondas or Toyotas of the last 20 years, then GO FOR IT! Also, if you cannot self-insure (again, preparation!) for something awful (not normal maintenance or wear items) like a timing belt failure or Tiptronic tranny failure, you might want to avoid owning an A6 without an extended warranty.

You didn't say if you are looking at an Avant or sedan, or 28.8, 2.7T, or 4.2. They are each quite different; try them before you decide. You don't see many Volvos recommended on AudiWorld. :-)

Default Go to Audi dealer and buy CPO car for a total of 6 yrs/100K warranty coverage.

Sounds like the Volvo is at a Volvo dealer. Name one highline car maker like Mercedes or BMW that offers longer than 4yr/50K bumper to bumper warranty on new cars? I think even Volvo only goes that long on the original warranty. If you bought an S60 with 53K, you' be in the same boat.

The S60 is smaller than the A6, and slots between the A6 and A4 - a bit like the VW Passat - which in higher trim forms, would probably be a closer match.

See Stoney's FAQ in the link at the bottom of my sig for all the basics of A6 knowledge.

Default I would be very careful with the fluid for the transmission.....

Use OEM transmission oil only for the automatic to prevent major failures. Redline oil is used in the manuals. ZF tip transmissions are very particular about oil used. Do a search and you will find a lot of good info, make sure your mechanic uses the correct oil

Default Re: from the Tech section...

The Audi is a 2.8. Can I get that PO warranty even with it having over 50K? The 2001 Volvo has a 2.4t and the 2004 just has the 2.4. I understand this is an Audi forum but I thought that someone could still give me some good advice because to be quite honest I know nothing about one or the other. I am ok with getting an aftermarket policy or Audi extended (if possible). I just want the better of the 2 cars that's all. I'm just looking for advice. I have the car fax on the Audi and the 2001 2.4t Volvo, both seem to be good cars one thing I see is the Audi is a bit bigger and the Volvo have about 16K less on the OD. Any advice these would be great. And if I did choose the Audi (if it's the best choice) Can someone tell me what to look into for warranty. I called the dealer and he said if the car had over 50K I was out of luck (didn't even offer an alternative).

Thank you all for your input.

Default The CPO checklist asks if car has less than 5 yrs/70k miles...

so I think that the car would qualify for CPO based on the miles, but not every used Audi at an Audi dealership goes through the CPO process. The certification does cost money, including the labor to repair the car, replace parts, etc.

Regardless of make/model you decide on, find one with certified pre-owned warranty. Just make sure you understand the differences between the programs. Many things not covered. Audi has a pretty good program for CPO. Not sure about Vovlo's. Here is a link to the 300 point checklist (just click on the link to download the cetification PDF):

http://www.audiusa.com/certified_certification/0,5779,110,00.html</a
