High mileage C5 A6 2.8L

Hello everyone,

I just crossed 200,000 miles with my 99 A6 2.8Q, I have completed all basic maintence including full syn oil 2500-3000 miles,Timing belt, tensioner, idlers, water pump, exhaust leaks, control arms etc.... This has been the best car I could ever ask for (knock on wood) I have learned so much working on this car! My concern is with this many miles what other maintence am i missing that could cause looming problems in the future. The compression is 160 on all six cylinders, drives and runs great too. What should i do to get another 200k out of the engine lol? Should I change transmission fluid even though the manual claims to be a "lifetime fluid"?

Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated

Ours has 173k on it..the 'plain-jane' 2.8l seems to be the workhorse of the VAG line. Just awesome, more-or-less reliable/ bullet-proof with the requisite care.
I wonder the same thing you do--what can I do to keep it going? suspension? Drivetrain? Electrical?
My best guess is the auto-trans will just up and croak someday..in the distance? As long as the engine *runs* the trans is the only thing that can really end the usefulness of the car from where I stand.

I'm in the same boat.. 170k, runs like a top. I'm not sure if changing the trans fluid and filter would be a bad idea, lots of people swear by it. I have not done mine though, but I'm considering it at 200k.

I think the engines are pretty much bulletproof as long as you take the basic care of them.

280k here. 99 2.8 appears to be one of the best in terms of reliability.

I'd change the trans fluid and check all the diff fluids. Other than that, just fix the stuff that breaks.

I am going to agree with that. You can throw a bunch of money into preventative maintenance, but at this point, who knows what may happen. If you keep up with the basics (ie oil changes, timing belt, w-pump, belts when it needs it) is it really worth shelling out money for something like wires and plugs that works fine right now but are getting old? I say save the money for things that actually need attention. At this point, you never know what may happen to make the car worthless tomorrow.

I'd service the trans ASAP.

I'm waiting till 200k for mine. =)

Slacker! ;-)

If I had my own lift, maybe I'd have done it by now.. But laying on my back, trying to get the car level using 3 different floor jacks, somehow not appealing.

Just crossed 225k... 2002 3.0 A6 Quattro. No major issues and all regular service done on time. Drives like it did at 100k
