Guilty as charged. Most times, been quite careful but there is always that one time where it goes over (very smoothly I must say), step outside and right away know that backing out is going to a PIA without bumper damage.

The couple times this had happened, I backed out slowly to minimize damage still, the bumper retainer(s) on fender were pulled down and there is a gap between them. I fixed it some extent this time when I pulled all out to do T-belt job. But, I removing this "lip" altogether is better.

I was thinking to put sort of like a momentary mechanical roller switch connected to a small beeper that would serve with warning tone in future. Will post when I finish that.

I think "parts car" is a bit of an exaggeration considering the work that's already been done on the engine & tranny.

$4000 asking price? Forget my original $8k comment! I didn't realize they've depreciated so much.

As a general rule, in my opinion ANY Audi out of warranty below a $13,000 price point is going to be a "project" to keep on the road.

That being said, pick up that Avant for $4k assuming it's a clean car plan for $2k in maintenance within the next 10k miles and you'll still have a nice daily driver for well under 10 grand. Just don't expect trouble free ownership.

Honestly a high mileage 2005 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon would likely be a much much more reliable and cost effective option in the mid-size wagon segment. More power, lighter, cheaper repairs, and still has AWD & leather. More expensive to get into but it'll give your Wife more peace of mind.

Did you respond to the right post? This branch of the thread is discussing front bumper design.

Nope, just focussing on Steve's original topic :]. As for bumpers? Two words: depth perception. I avoid curbs and tall obstacles and enter steep driveways slowly at a diagonal angle and that generally prevents any bumper to pavement contact. Never once cursed Audi for their bumper design. Though when I'm low on Coilovers this may change.

In that case, it works much better if you respond directly to the original post (quote and reply) instead of way down this branch.

Agreed on the depth perception. Should be able to walk between front bumper and curb when parked.

He's allowing me to drive the car the my mechanic to get it fully pre inspected. Is it even worth it>?
So, did you buy it? What did your mechanic say?

For an asking price of $4K, if the car is solid and clean otherwise, this could be good solid transportation for years (if you have a *good* private mechanic who know these cars well).

You should be able to buy it for $3500 +/-.

My '99 is at 215K. Still love driving it!
