How To: Airbag Control Module Replacement
#21
In the radio removal step: What keys are you referring to? My ignition keys do not fit in those slots. Is there anything else I can try? I tried spark plug gapper - it fit the slot but did nothing. I also tried butter and regular knives.
Please help!
I'm changing the whole shifter (previous owner destroyed it). I am stranded until I get this car rolling again.
Thanks,
Javi

Success! Replacing Airbag Control Module
Thanks very much for the excellent procedure. My 2001 A6 2.7T 175,000 miles had the airbag light on and the VAG COM said the ACM lost it's memory. Dealer wanted about $700 for the part. I called the fine folks at B&R Auto Wrecking 800-327-7380 and was able to get the exact part 4B0 959 655 F (I have the airbags above the doors) for about $100 including shipping. I did not even have to re code it with the VAG COM. Plugged it in, started the car, no more light!
Took my old ACM apart, no sign of any damage. Just a bunch of electronic parts and some type of accelerometer.
With my A6, I did not need to unplug the parking brake wire. Also, for others, be sure to have the special tools to remove the radio. The tools look like small knife blades that get stabbed into the 4 small slots in the radio face. 4 are required. I bought 2 off of Ebay and made the other 2 from an old hacksaw blade on my bench grinder.
Thanks again for taking the time to share with others!

Got a problem
I replaced my airbag control module (had fault code 65535) yesterday, following this tutorial.
All went fine, I soft-coded the unit, cleared the fault codes and the airbag light went off.
I drove it for about 10 minutes without any issues or lights.
This morning I start it up and the airbag light is back on with the same error code - 65535.
Any idea what is happening here?
It seems like this time and the last time the light came on after an extreme cold night. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.
